HOW TO BREATHE – In case you have forgotten.

  • The Buteyko Breathing Method is a powerful approach for reversing health problems associated with improper breathing, the most common of which are over breathing and mouth breathing, including poor sleep, sleep apnoea and anxiety
  • When you stop mouth breathing and learn to bring your breathing volume toward normal, you have better oxygenation of your tissues and organs, including your brain
  • You breathe to remove excess CO2, but it’s still important that your breathing volume is normal, to maintain ideal CO2 levels in your lungs. Lack of CO2 constricts your blood vessels and detrimentally affects your heart function
  • The heavier you breathe, the less oxygen that’s actually delivered throughout your body due to lack of carbon dioxide, which causes your blood vessels to constrict
  • Processed foods, which tend to acidify your blood in an attempt to maintain normal pH, will make you breathe heavier. This is because one of the roles of carbon dioxide, which is in your blood, is to regulate pH

Buteyko Breathing Method Can Improve Your Health and Fitness

This is the simplest, most inexpensive yet effective natural strategy to help you optimize your health, and it doesn’t get any simpler or more affordable than learning to breathe properly.

The Buteyko Breathing Method—named after the Russian physician who developed the technique—is a powerful approach for reversing health problems the most common of which are over breathing and mouth breathing.

When you stop mouth breathing and learn to bring your breathing volume toward normal, you have better oxygenation of your tissues and organs, including your brain.

Factors of modern life, including stress, processed foods, and lack of exercise, all increases your everyday breathing.

Typical characteristics of over breathing include mouth breathing, upper chest breathing, sighing, noticeable breathing during rest, and taking large breaths prior to talking.

Dr. Buteyko discovered the method as a result of trying to address his own dangerously high blood pressure at the age of 26.

His expected life span was about one and a half years,His systolic over diastolic was 220/110, which is indicating very high blood pressure… An idea came to him that possibly how he was breathing was contributing to his high blood pressure.

So, he started learning how to calm down his breathing to bring it toward normal. The aches and pains of different symptoms that he had then reduced quite quickly.

It was on that basis then that he looked to the theoretical research that was available at the time. And then he started applying it to his patients. That’s how he developed the method.”

How the Buteyko Method Might Benefit Your Health

Besides asthma and hypertension, there are many other areas where the Buteyko Method is useful, such as anxiety and sleep apnoea.

How you breathe affects the oxygenation of your organs. The detrimental effects of mouth breathing, hyperventilation and over breathing are well-documented. Up to 50 peer reviewed papers of the importance of nose breathing can be found on the Buteyko Clinic’s website.

The Buteyko Method is built upon the premise that you survive on food, water, and air. Naturally, the quality of each is of utmost importance, but when it comes to air, few consider the quantity of air they breathe as a having such an enormously profound health impact.

“Modern life has a significant influence on how we breathe.” Most people would say, ‘There’s nothing wrong with my breathing. It’s natural to breathe.’ Of course, it is.

However, there are quite a few influences on your breathing, including, for instance, stress. Because as you get stressed, your breathing increases. If you’re in long-term stress, your body habituates a heavier volume of breathing,”

Interestingly, processed foods, which tend to acidify your blood in an attempt to maintain normal pH, will also make you breathe heavier. This is because one of the roles of carbon dioxide, which is in your blood, is to regulate pH.

Besides water, raw fruits and vegetables have the least impact on your breathing, followed by cooked vegetables.

Processed, high protein and high grain meals have the greatest adverse effect on the way you breathe.

The Buteyko Method teaches you how to bring your breathing volume back toward normal or, in other words, to reverse what’s called chronic hyperventilation or chronic over breathing. When your breathing is normal, you have better oxygenation of tissues and organs, including your brain.

Nasal congestion and runny nose are the most common causes of mouth breathing. This in turn is associated with increasingly troublesome problems, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Poor sleep and insomnia
  • Mood disorders
  • Snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea
  • D.H.D.
  • Anxiety Disorders

The Effects of Nitric Oxide

Nitric oxide is found in your nose, so when you breathe through your nose, you carry a small portion of the gas into your lungs. Nitric oxide plays a significant role in homeostasis, or the maintaining of balance within your body. Nitric oxide is also:

  • A significant bronchodilator (i.e. opens up your breathing tubes)
  • An antibacterial agent that helps neutralize germs and bacteria
  • A vasodilator (i.e. dilates blood vessels to help the circulation of blood oxygen)

This is one of the amazing aspects of Buteyko therapy. As you breathe exclusively through your nose and abandon mouth breathing, your nose starts to water and you frequently have to blow it. But amazingly your nasal passages eventually expand quite dramatically and it becomes much easier to get all your air through your nose rather than your mouth.

This is true even for high intensity exercises like. It may take a few months to work up to it, but once you are there you will rarely if even need to breathe through your mouth again, even under the most extreme circumstances.

Asthmatics typically breathe through the mouth. They also tend to breathe heavier and have a higher respiratory rate than non-asthmatics. There’s a feedback loop going on here, in that the heavier breathing volume that’s coming into your lungs cause a disturbance of blood gasses, including the loss of carbon dioxide (CO2). Contrary to popular belief, carbon dioxide is not merely a waste gas. Although you breathe to get rid of excess CO2, it’s very important that your breathing volume is normal, in order to maintain a certain amount of CO2 in your lungs.

“If you’re breathing too heavily, you lose carbon dioxide, and smooth muscles surrounding your airways constrict. Another factor from an asthmatic point of view is dehydration of the inner walls of the airways. It’s a combination of these factors that cause the airways to constrict.

Heavy breathing is causing the loss of carbon dioxide. And carbon dioxide also helps to relax smooth muscles surrounding your blood vessels. So, it’s not just the airways which constrict when you’re breathing too much, but it’s also the blood vessels.”

As your airway constricts, there is a natural reaction to breathe more intensely as a compensatory mechanism. However, this causes even greater loss of carbon dioxide, and cooling of your airway causes it to close even more. In other words, asthma symptoms feed back to the condition and make it worse.

You can test this out by taking five or six big breaths in and out of your mouth, as though you were blowing up a balloon.  Most people will begin to experience some light-headedness or dizziness. While you might reason that taking bigger breaths through your mouth allows you to take more oxygen into your body, which should make you feel better, the opposite actually happens.

This is because you’re getting rid of too much carbon dioxide from your lungs, which causes your blood vessels to constrict—hence the light-headedness. So, the heavier you breathe, the less oxygen that’s actually delivered throughout your body due to lack of carbon dioxide, which causes your blood vessels to constrict.

“Also, when you breathe too much, your red blood cells hold on to the oxygen and don’t deliver so readily to where it is needed throughout your body.

“In order for oxygenation to take place, we need the presence of carbon dioxide. Heavy breathing causing the loss of CO2 is not only causing blood vessels to constrict, but it’s also causing a greater affinity of the red blood cells with oxygen.

… If you were to look at the basic premise of breathing, we should not hear our breathing during rest. We should see very little movement from the chest and tummy. Ideally, most of our breathing is diaphragmatic, but we shouldn’t see it. The mouth should be closed, breathing should be regular, and breathing should be effortless.”

How Breathing Affects Sports

The way you breathe also affects your heart. Typically, athletes who experience cardiac arrest or heart attack don’t fit the model of a person with heart problems. Most are in the prime of health. However, many athletes do breathe very heavily, for obvious reasons.

“Heavy breathing, which is causing a loss of carbon dioxide, is causing reduced blood flow to the heart,” . “The heart is experiencing less blood flow… and less delivery of oxygen. The heart, like any other muscle, also needs oxygen to perform properly. In the event that the heart is having insufficient blood flow and insufficient oxygen, it can alter the electrocardiogram readings, including and causing arrhythmia.

Arrhythmia is when the pulse gets out of control and gets too fast. If the pulse gets completely chaotic, the heart may stop, which will cut circulation off to the rest of the body, including the brain. So it’s really important for all of us that our breathing is normal, not only elite athletes or those people who are involved with athletics.”

“When you subject your body to a reduced partial pressure of oxygen, as is the case during high-intensity training… you’re going into anaerobic metabolism, so you’re working without air.

What happens is that your spleen, which is an organ located just under your diaphragm (it’s basically your blood bank), it contains about eight percent of the total red blood cell count. But if you’re doing high-intensity exercise or involving breath holding during exercise, the arterial saturation of oxygen is dropping. The spleen will sense this drop of oxygen, so it will release more red blood cells into circulation.

Now, another factor is that your kidneys, during high-intensity exercise and during breath-hold exercise, become slightly hypoxic; there’s reduced oxygen in the blood. In response to that, your kidneys will synthesize a hormone called EPO, which stimulates the maturation of red blood cells in your bone marrow.

So, the benefits of high-intensity exercise and also incorporating breath-holding into walking, for instance, will lead to improved oxygen-carrying capacity in red blood cells. We’ve heard of many athletes who have to do this unethically and illegally. But we should really tap into our body’s natural resource, because our body has everything that we need, if we know how to guide it.”

This is why training at high (oxygen deprived) altitudes can be effective for athletes.

Exercises to Reverse Your Mouth Breathing

Fortunately, it’s actually quite easy to address mouth breathing.

  1. Take a small gentle breath in through your nose, and a small gentle breath out through your nose.
  2. Then, hold your nose while gently nodding your head up and down; holding your breath for as long as possible.
  3. Release your nose to breathe through your nose again.
  4. Wait for about 30 seconds to a minute, and then repeat the exercise.

“If you hold your breath or do that exercise about six times, you will start experiencing nasal decongestion. When breathing volume is brought toward normal, the nose will remain free of congestion,”

Keep in mind that while it is a perfectly safe exercise for the vast majority of people, if you have any cardiac complaints, such as high blood pressure, are pregnant, have type 1 diabetes or experience panic attacks, then please do not hold your breath beyond the first urges to breathe

Control Pause

A useful tool with Buteyko breathing is a simple concept called the control pause.

The control pause provides feedback about your relative breathing volume. To obtain an accurate measurement you need to rest for 10 minutes before doing this exercise:.

  1. Take a small, silent breath in through your nose and allow a small silent breath out through your nose.
  2. Hold your nose with your fingers to prevent air from entering your lungs.
  3. Count the number of seconds until you feel the first definite desire to breathe.
  4. At the first definite desire to breathe in, you may also feel the first involuntary movements of your breathing muscles. Your tummy may jerk and the area around your neck may contract.
  5. Your inhalation at the end of the breath should be calm.
  6. Release your nose and breathe in through it.

Remember that taking your control pause entails holding your breath only until you feel the first involuntary movements of your breathing muscles, or the first stress of your body telling you to “breathe.”

If you had to take a big breath at the end of the breath hold, then you held your breath for too long and so do the exercise again after a brief rest.

A very good control pause amounts to 40 seconds, and a good control pause amounts to 30 seconds. A control pause of 25 seconds indicates room for improvement, while a control pause of 15 seconds or less is indicative of symptoms such as respiratory complaints (asthma, wheezing, coughing, chest tightness or nasal problems), sleep disordered breathing (insomnia, fatigue, snoring, or obstructive sleep apnoea) or anxiety complaints (excessive worrying, high stress levels, poor concentration) or any other condition resulting from chronic over breathing.

The good news is that you will feel better each time your control pause increases by five seconds, and the first step to increase your control pause is to learn to breathe through your nose both day and night.

My Experience with Buteyko Breathing

I don’t believe I was a mouth-breather during normal activities, but during high-intensity exercise I was hyperventilating to the max through an open mouth. It was my perception that this was the best way to maximize my oxygen intake. But my perception and understanding of reality was completely wrong.

However, after learning about the Buteyko Method, I gradually began trying to keep my mouth closed during intense exercise. It’s pretty easy to do the first two intervals, but after that it becomes progressively more difficult

But now, with an improved appreciation of the importance of this technique, I persevered and decided I would build up gradually. So with some persistence and over a matter of a month or so, I was actually able to complete all of my Peak Fitness exercises, with my heart rate above my maximum of 162, with my mouth closed.

Previously I thought this would be impossible for me to ever achieve. I have been doing this for several months now and can very comfortably breathe through my nose and not feel I am gasping for air. It really was a very remarkable improvement from my perspective and I am very glad that I tried it again and persisted.

I did notice initially however that my nose would get runny. I had to blow my nose when done. But eventually I reached a point where the runny nose and the need to blow my nose completely vanished, and I was simply breathing easier.

Again, doing the exercise to unblock your nose (above) will help to get over this congestion.

Anyone who is able to walk at a reasonably fast pace is able to exercise with their mouth closed, according to Patrick. However, for those individuals who are quite breathless during their normal exercise, are pregnant, or have any cardiovascular complaint, it is recommended to go easy and to slow down the pace in order to maintain nasal breathing.

During physical exercise, the rule of thumb is to not push yourself beyond the point that you are unable to maintain nasal breathing. If you feel the need to open your mouth, then slow down and recover.

Breathing Exercise to Quell Panic Attacks and Anxiety

Another breathing exercise that can help if you’re experiencing anxiety or panic attacks, or if you feel very stressed and your mind can’t stop racing is the following:

  1. Take a small breath into your nose; a small breath out;
  2. Hold your nose for five seconds in order to hold your breath, and then
  3. Release to resume breathing.
  4. Breathe normally for 10 seconds.
  5. Repeat the sequence four times

This sequence helps retain and gently accumulate carbon dioxide, leading to calmer breathing and reduces anxiety.  The urge to breathe will decline as you go into a more relaxed state.

How Do You Know When You’re Breathing Correctly?

Place one hand on your chest and your other hand just above your navel, to tune into how your body behaves when you breathe. Then, gently slow down your breathing, decreasing the size of each breath as you go along.

The objective is that either you’re tuned in to the rate and the rhythm of the breath and you make it less than what it was before you started, or you bring a feeling of relaxation. As you bring a feeling of relaxation to your body, your breathing diminishes.

You need to get to the point that you feel a tolerable need for air. The crucial thing here is to develop an air hunger, which simply means that there’s a slight accumulation of carbon dioxide in your blood which sends a signal to your brain saying ‘breathe’.

When you have air hunger for about three or four minutes, you will start experiencing the effects of an accumulation of CO2:

(1) Keep an eye on your body temperature. You’ll often find that your hands are warmer. Your face may be warmer. Your body may be warmer.

(2) Your eyes may go slightly glassy.

(3) Your nose may run a little bit.

(4) You may have increased saliva in your mouth—a sign that the parasympathetic nervous system has been activated.”

The Buteyko method is about bringing your breathing volume toward normal, which helps neutralize the effects of stress.

The more you practice bringing your breathing volume toward normal, the more the respiratory centre within your brain becomes programmed to maintain this normal rate of breathing—even during exercise.

Why Light Breathing Is Good for Your Health

Compared to an average untrained person, an athlete will breathe much lighter during a bout of exercise.

Furthermore, normal breathing volume in any medical textbook is between four, six, or seven litres of air per minute, which translates into 12-14 breaths.

Clinical trials involving asthmatics show they breathe between 10-15 litres of air per minute and people with chronic heart disease tend to breathe between 15-18 litres of air per minute.

“When you think about this, this means that light breathing is good,”  “So, an individual sitting down is going to have light breathing when they’re relatively healthy. An individual, who may be not feeling well, has different complaints or conditions, breathes heavily.”

Part and parcel of this is your tolerance to carbon dioxide. When your body and brain have a normal tolerance of CO2, your breathing will be light and smooth as your body is not constantly trying to get rid of too much CO2.

Contrary to popular belief, the primary stimulant signalling your body to take a breath is not lack of oxygen; rather it is an excess CO2.

“Oxygen only drives your breathing when oxygen levels drop to about 50 percent, and that would be quite an extreme situation. So, your body breathes to get rid of the excess gas, CO2,”

That said, you always need a certain amount of CO2 for normal functioning. If you have normal CO2, you will have a good tolerance to it, which translates into a higher breath-hold time. Also, when you exercise, your body generates more carbon dioxide, and if you have good tolerance to CO2, your breathing will remain much lower than someone who has a poor tolerance to CO2.

Another Reason Why You Want to Limit the Amount of Air You Breathe

There have been a number of studies that show this type of breathing provides similar benefits to that of altitude training, which has been used by elite athletes for some time now to give them a competitive advantage.

The beautiful aspect of Buteyko breathing is that you get very similar benefits without the inconvenience or hassle of travelling to the mountains..

This is good because there is a dual purpose to oxygen, and while it is certainly necessary for life, excessive amounts will prematurely accelerate oxidative damage and aging.

So the key is to use the absolute least amount that you need and avoid excessive amounts of it.

This way you won’t need to rely on your body’s own and even supplemental sources of antioxidants to counteract the damage that excessive oxygen can cause to your tissues.

CANCER DIET – Why Bother ?

The Concept of a Cancer Diet

A bad diet during a cancer treatment has destroyed many alternative cancer treatments!!

Something as simple as adding refined salt to your foods may destroy an entire cancer treatment!!

THE CANCER DIET IS JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE CANCER TREATMENT ITSELF.

IF THE CANCER DIET IS NOT TREATING THE CANCER, THEN IT IS INTERFERING WITH THE CANCER TREATMENT!!!

Another thing that must be understood is that the logic a person must use on a cancer treatment diet is different than the logic they are accustomed to using in dealing with orthodox medicine. For example:

When taking orthodox drugs, you might encounter something like this:

Step 1: Take the yellow and green pills.

Step 2: Do not drink alcohol or tea after taking the pills.

What about the foods and drinks not specifically mentioned in Step 1 and Step 2? With orthodox medicine you are free to eat anything at all that is not prohibited.

But with alternative cancer treatments just the opposite is true, what you don’t eat is just as important as what you are allowed to eat.

Most people who get cancer get it because of the things they have eaten!! The wrong foods created an internal terrain which allowed the body to be filled with fungus , such that when a carcinogenic substance reacted with the body, the internal terrain could not deal with the carcinogenic substance and the person got cancer.

In fact, many scientific studies have shown that diet alone, meaning the foods that were eaten, caused cancer. Thus, by default, if you want to reverse your cancer, you must reverse your diet to create a strong inner terrain.

A cancer diet severely restricts what you can eat. By default, if it is not specifically allowed to be eaten in the treatment plan, don’t eat it!!

Another key fact is that many people crave certain foods. Thus, switching from the diet that caused your cancer to a diet that is needed to cure your cancer may involve the stopping of eating foods that you crave. This compounds the problem and means even more effort is needed to stick to the diet.

It gets worse. Fungus creates a craving for foods. Fungus must eat, and when they don’t get what they are used to (e.g. tobacco, meat, ice cream, cheese) they in some way send a signal to your body to EAT those foods they are used to. Thus, virtually everyone who switches to a good “cancer diet” has to fight the signals caused by the fungus.

Not All Cancer Diets are the Same

Another thing that must be understood is that for some cancer treatments there are special diets. So, not all cancer diets are the same.

For example, in the “InnerLight” cancer treatment of Robert O. Young, PhD, almost all fruits are forbidden. They are forbidden for good reason in his diet! His diet is designed to balance the pH in the blood and “remove” (I use that term in a non-technical way in this case) yeast and fungus (Y/F) from the body! Like a few other cancer treatments, his treatment converts cancer cells into normal cells.

But in other cancer treatments fruits are not only allowed, they are an integral part of the treatment. Why? Because some cancer diets are designed to kill cancer cells, and some fruits contain massive amounts of cancer-killing nutrients and the glucose in these fruits “carries” the cancer-killing nutrients into the cancer cells, which gobble up glucose and steal it from normal cells. This means they also steal the cancer-killing nutrients from normal cells. This can lead to cancer cell death.

Top priority is given to killing fungus and other microbes in the body (i.e. starving them to death or creating an inner terrain that converts them into something harmless). It is somewhat similar to the Robert O. Young diet.

I recommend the Robert O. Young book: Sick and Tired? – Reclaim Your Inner Terrain and you should use the exact diet Dr. Young tells you is the ideal way to go. This diet is very close to his, so if you cannot get his book, or until you understand his diet, use this article.

What about the Gerson diet, the Kelley Metabolic diet, the Moerman diet, the Budweg Diet and so on? If you want to go on the Kelley treatment, that is fine, use his diet and supplements. The Gerson and Moerman diets, however, seem to be outdated when compared to newer diets. However, you should note that some parts of these diets may contain things that are superior to current diets (e.g. iodine).

The “cancer diet” is a never ending study of the right combinations of foods.

Understanding What A Cancer Diet Is

Note that cancer is caused by microbes which are inside the cancer cells. These microbes love nothing better than sugar and dairy products!!! Ponder that and keep reading.

With regards to a cancer treatment, every food that we eat or drink can be categorized into several different categories:

  1. Foods that feed and strengthen the cancer cells and/or the microbes in the cancer cells and body. Examples would be: refined sugar, refined flour, fizzy pop drinks, dairy products, etc.
  2. Foods that can cause cancer (e.g. trans fatty acids [margarine, french fries and virtually every other processed food you buy], aspartame [Diet Coke, NutraSweet, etc.], MSG, polyunsaturated oils [e.g. corn oil], etc.)
  3. Foods that directly interfere with alternative treatments for cancer (e.g. chlorine, fluoride, alcohol, coffee, etc.)
  4. Foods that occupy and distract the immune system from focusing on killing the cancer cells (e.g. beef, turkey, meat products )
  5. Foods that contain nutrients that kill the cancer cells, stop the spread of cancer, or in some other way help treat the cancer (e.g. purple grapes with seeds and skin, red raspberries with seeds, strawberries with seeds, broccoli, cauliflower, several herbs, carrots, pineapples, almonds, etc.)
  6. In addition there are things like cooking vegetables. The cooking destroys the enzymes in the vegetables and make them far less digestible and far less effective in treating cancer. Pasteurizing any food or drink also does this.

Ideally, during a cancer treatment, if foods are allowed on a particular diet,100% of everything you eat should be in the category of :

“Foods that contain nutrients that kill the cancer cells, stop the spread of cancer, or in some other way help treat the cancer.”

Whenever you eat a food that is not in that category, you are interfering with your cancer treatment!

Some foods, however, are in more than one category. For example, grapes feed glucose to cancer cells, plus they contain nutrients that kill cancer cells. So should you take grapes? Generally, no.

But also understand that not all vegetables and fruits are equal at treating cancer. Some vegetables do not contribute significantly to treating cancer and some fruits do not contribute significantly to treating cancer. On the other hand, some vegetables are very potent cancer killers, as are some fruits.

A Critical Definition

In the alternative health field the term “fasting” has a very different definition than that used by many people. In alternative medicine, the term “fast” or “fasting” generally means that a person can drink water and a limited amount of other drinks and foods.

“Fasts” are critical to many alternative cancer treatments, but again understand that the term “fast” allows certain foods or drinks to be taken during the “fast.”

Perhaps the term “fast” could be associated with the term “restricted” or “limited,” because that is all it means.

Whatever cancer diet you choose, 50% or more of the foods you eat should be high in oxalic acid – but not too many greens. Oxalic acid is deadly to cancer cells.

Carrot juice, with a little beet juice, is a common cancer treatment. Both foods are high in oxalic acid.

Chlorine, Fluoride and Other Toxic Chemicals

Avoid all chlorine in your diet. This includes avoiding foods made with tap water. Chlorine destroys many phytonutrients and other nutrients, thus the damage done to the food during processing, if chlorine is used, is permanent and cannot be reversed. This means, for example, not drinking cordial or any other drinks that have been made by mixing tap water with something else.

Vegetables

As a general rule, ALL vegetables should be organic. Green vegetables, including grasses (generally juiced) and sprouts, MUST be the foundation of a good cancer diet. The fibre, enzymes, chlorophyll, minerals, and many nutrients are necessary for your cancer diet.

Even if you could figure out a cancer diet without eating green vegetables (including the grasses), you should not do it. These are REQUIRED to be the foundation of your cancer diet!!

Just as there are some things you must not eat, there are some things you MUST eat.

Juicing vegetables and grasses will help get more nutrients into the body. However, some whole vegetables should be eaten in order to get the fibre. Fibre is also critical to a cancer treatment.

As with all juices, the juice should be drunk immediately after they are prepared in order to avoid oxidation and loss of enzymes from the juice. In cases where many small doses of a fresh vegetable juice are needed to be taken (e.g. to avoid diarrhoea), the juice can be refrigerated during the day in a sealed airtight glass container.

Essentially, you should have organic, fresh salads/vegetables/juiced grasses/sprouts for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Many of the other foods that are allowed on this diet should be mixed in with the salad, except for the vegetable juices.

A list of such vegetables taken from the Young book:

“broccoli [*], asparagus [*], beets [*-moderation], cabbage [*], carrots [*-moderation], cauliflower [*], celery, cucumbers, egg-plant, green and yellow squash [moderation], green beans and peas (fresh), red[*] and yellow[*] peppers (also green[*] if they agree with you), spinach, mustard greens, collards, kale [*], lettuce, okra, parsley[*], scallions, radishes, Swiss chard, watercress, sea vegetables, such as nori, wakame and niziki, wheat grass[*-usually juiced], barley grass[*-usually taken as a supplement], turnips[*], and sprouted grains[*] or beans[*]. Also eat lots of garlic[*] and onion[*], if they agree with you

The [*] symbol means this is a known anti-cancer food and these foods should be favoured. The Young book is not specific to cancer, so it is necessary to inject comments relative to cancer. By the way, both of the Robert O. Young books have a number of recipes in them.

It would be a really good idea to juice all of the vegetables available that have the [*] symbol above!!

Nuts

In general, only whole almonds, whole macadamia nuts and whole walnuts are allowed on a cancer diet.

Almonds and macadamia nuts both have laetrile, and both are acceptable. Walnuts have the very critical omega 3.

Other nuts should be used very sparingly.

Peanuts (which are not really nuts) and cashews both have too much fungus and should not be used at all.

With the exception of walnuts being used in a Budweg Diet treatment, even the acceptable nuts should be used sparingly.

The Super foods

By a very wide margin, the best foods in the world are wheatgrass juice, barley grass juice and a few other grasses. Only a small number of vegetables can even come close to these super foods.

Such foods are absolutely required for a cancer treatment, mostly due to chlorophyll.

Legumes

Legumes, except peanuts, are allowed to be eaten by cancer patients, but only in moderation and only to stabilize the weight of the patient or to provide protein.

Soy Products

To put it mildly, soy products are a highly controversial issue among alternative health experts. Some experts love some soy products, and others hate all soy products (and that is also putting it mildly). It is up to your own judgment on this issue. Let me quote from Dr. Young’s book:

“The diet can include fresh soy sprouts, organic soybeans, fresh tofu, soy oil, and lecithin (a by-product of soy). Try to find organically grown beans and soy products. While the sprouts are recommended without reservation, processed soybean, especially tofu, comes with some cautions…”Sick and Tired? Reclaim Your Inner Terrain, Robert O. Young,

In reality, all soy products should be avoided except fresh soy sprouts. Soy sprouts have an impressive number of anti-cancer nutrients and are acceptable as part of your salads, if you can make your own soy sprouts.

Whole Grains

Whole grains can be used only when a cancer patient is fighting dangerous weight loss. If the weight loss is uncontrolled, they should consider a cachexia treatment plan, based on Hydrazine Sulphate. Yeast, which every cancer patient has throughout their body, converts complex carbohydrates into simple carbohydrates, so even whole grains should be avoided when possible. In any case, avoid commercially stored grains and potatoes.

Another reason to avoid even whole grains is that over the decades the soil has become acidic and because of the soil many whole grains have more fungus than they did many decades ago. Corn and rice (because of the way they are stored) are grains that should be totally avoided.

Yeast (Baker’s and Brewer’s)

This is another reason for avoiding processed bread and other bakery products:

“Japanese research links breast cancer with the ingestion of goods baked with yeast.”

” The problem is mycotoxins, which are waste products of yeast. There are many health problems that can be directly attributed to yeast, including arteriosclerosis, obesity, and AIDS.”

NO flour (using yeast) can be used in a cancer diet, not even if whole grains are used!

Meat, Fish, Fowl, Eggs, Dairy Products

All beef, all pork, all fish, all turkey and all chicken should be avoided during a cancer treatment. There are many reasons for these restrictions. The only exception is that if a person is fighting weight loss, some fresh, freshwater fish can be eaten if that is the ONLY thing the cancer patient will eat (e.g. they won’t eat beans or other legumes).

Avoid all dairy products, including butter, all cheeses and all malts, except cottage cheese or skim milk when used in the Budwig Diet. One exception is that pregnant and nursing women should eat two eggs per day because the choline is necessary for the baby’s brain development and the baby takes precedence since two eggs a day is not life-threatening to a cancer patient.

If a person must have milk, the only acceptable variety is unprocessed goat’s milk, “from organically grown and grazing goats.”

The Robert O. Young book contains two long pages detailing why all animal products are bad for humans. Specifically, meat is so bad for a cancer diet.

The Rule of Thumb is this: “if it contains something that came from an animal, it is forbidden!”

Sweeteners, the Bad and the Good

ALL man-made sweeteners (e.g. aspartame – NutraSweet) and fat substitutes should also be avoided. These items are most often associated with brain cancer, but everyone should avoid them. This is one of many reasons fizzy and flavoured drinks are out of the question. They are also acidic.

There is only one acceptable sweetener in a cancer diet –Stevia, which is a herb.

Sugar and Refined Grains

You should absolutely avoid eating refined sugar and refined grains and anything else refined. These things not only feed the fungus and yeast in your body, they also feed the cancer cells. The yeast in flour makes things even worse. Do not eat anything where yeast, fungus or mould is used, added or is a part of.

In addition, refined sugar and other simple sugars also interfere with your immunity system. These substances also interfere with getting Vitamin C and oxygen into the cancer cells. Sugar also depletes the body of key minerals and other nutrients because of its acidity. It is not the acidity that directly destroys the minerals; the acidity causes the body to use the minerals to regulate the pH level in the body. The same is true of all acidic foods.

The chain reaction caused in the body by acidic foods (due to the body’s attempts to keep the blood at a level pH) is the cause, or a major contributing factor, to almost all chronic diseases, including cancer.

It would take an entire book to describe how the body keeps its pH normal, and the ramifications of these processes. In fact, that is the main theme of Dr. Young’s book mentioned above.

Honey

If sugar is bad for people with cancer, how about honey, another simple sugar? Honey is a case of both the good and the bad. Honey contains simple sugars, the fructose (38 percent) and glucose (31 percent) feed cancer cells. The good news is that honey contains powerful phenolic antioxidants.

However, like grape juice, it should be avoided unless used in a very controlled “fast”

If a cancer patient absolutely has to have some sweetness during his or her transition to a cancer diet, and Stevia is not available, then honey, in small amounts, is acceptable.

Fruits, Dried Fruits and Fruit Juices

The only fruits that are allowed on this diet, without restrictions, are the following: unsweetened lime, unsweetened lemon, and avocados. That is it.

Lemons are actually a required part of any cancer treatment because of their beneficial effect on the liver and because they get oxygen into the body. Lemon juice and lime juice should be taken primarily just before bedtime.

Mushrooms (Fungi), Seaweed and other Saccharides

There are some mushrooms that are used in cancer treatments, generally as supplements. Realizing that some mushrooms kill cancer cells, but are at the same time primarily a fungus, take heed. Mushrooms are one of the good and bad foods. Use with caution.

The good news about mushrooms is that they do contain polysaccharides, which are essential to the immunity system. Mushroom supplements such as beta glucan are certainly acceptable to a cancer diet.

“Polysaccharides from mushrooms do not attack cancer cells directly, but produce their antitumor effects by activating different immune responses in the host. The anti-tumor action of polysaccharides requires an intact T-cell component; their activity is mediated through a thymus-dependent immune mechanism.”
Algae (e.g. chlorella and spirulina)

Dr. Young says to stay away from blue-green algae, chlorella and spirulina. For cancer patients, I strongly disagree with this advice with regards to the chlorella and spirulina.

The benefits of chlorella and spirulina to a cancer patient, I believe, far outweigh the negative aspects. Between spirulina and chlorella they contain: polysaccharides (required for immune system communications), vitamin B12, GLA, Chlorophyll Growth Factor (CGF) and a host of other powerful anti-cancer nutrients. A vegan diet simply cannot provide all of these things especially Vitamin B12.

If you do choose to avoid these items, then make sure you eat plenty of fresh organic broccoli.

Salt

Refined salt may be a major cause of cancer. Refined salt, the wrong fats, margarine and butter are the main causes of red blood cells sticking together (called: rouleau), causing them to absorb less oxygen and making haemoglobin a free meal for yeast and fungus. The clumped together red blood cells do not get as much oxygen into the cells of the body. Also, the clumped together red blood cells cannot pass through the smaller arteries/capillaries, meaning much less (if any) oxygen gets to cells in these areas of the body, and some of these cells may be turned to anaerobic (i.e. cancerous). As if that weren’t bad enough, once the cells are cancerous, the oxygen still can’t get to the cancer cells to slow down their spreading or kill them.

On the other hand, natural sea salt has a very similar mineral content as human blood. It is truly a health food as long as you don’t eat too much of it. Here is a quote:

“Salts obtained from solar evaporation of sea water are entirely different from modern refined salt. The plural “salts’ is deliberately used here, because sea water salts are actually a complex blend of trace minerals, as well as calcium and magnesium salts.

Table salt today, [on the other hand,] is primarily kiln-dried sodium chloride with anti-caking agents added. Trace minerals, as well as calcium, magnesium and potassium salts are removed in processing. Kiln-drying involves scorching salt at high heat to remove moisture. This refining process creates a product that is unnatural and hard on the body. It is the true culprit that contributes to high blood pressure, heart trouble, kidney disease and eczema, among other problems.”

Bad Fats and Oils

Other foods you should absolutely avoid are trans fats, meaning trans fatty acids or partially hydrogenated oils. Trans fatty acids may be one of the major causes of cancer. They become part of the cell’s wall (replacing cholesterol) and make the cell wall rigid or sticky and can make the cell anaerobic (i.e. the first step to becoming cancerous) because large oxygen clusters cannot get into the cells.

Like refined salt, these fats also destroy the electrical charge of red blood cells, causing them to “stick” together. When this happens, among other things, the red blood cells do not get to many cancer cells, meaning the cancer cells get far less oxygen (if any), meaning they thrive because they are anaerobic.

Another bad food for cancer patients is polyunsaturated oils. Polyunsaturated oils (e.g. corn oils sold in supermarkets everywhere) promote the growth of small blood vessels (by promoting the production of “bad” prostaglandins). This is bad for cancer because it allows tumours to grow new blood vessels.

In short, avoid all heated oils.

Herbs and Spices

All herbs and spices are acceptable, except black pepper and other highly acidic spices. Turmeric, which contains curcumin, is a spice that is a potent anti-cancer food.

As with all foods, the storage of herbs can cause them to be high in fungus. So use fresh organic herbs wherever possible.

Junk Foods, Condiments and Other Comments

Do not eat at a restaurant unless it has a menu specifically for organic, raw foods.

Condiments are absolutely forbidden. One of the most acidic foods on earth is black pepper (black pepper is a major cause of acid reflux disease). Avoid soy sauce, pickled vegetables, relish, green olives, sauerkraut, and cucumber pickles.

Basically, any “refined” or processed food that contains sugar, refined salt, aspartame, MSG, trans-fatty acids, colouring, other additives, refined flour, etc. etc. should be avoided. Even the cooking of food kills critical enzymes needed for digestion.

There is a trend in the food industry of making “no trans fats” foods. This does not mean these are healthy foods. They are processed.

While it is true that cooking does release some vitamins, by a very wide margin, overall it is better to eat food raw, if it can be safely eaten raw.

Tobacco – Stop smoking (no matter what kind of cancer you have), because smoking puts more than 100 carcinogens in your body. Tobacco is also very high in sugar, fungi and yeasts. Part of this is due to the way tobacco leaves are processed.

Alcohol – stop drinking alcohol (which is a “primary mycotoxin”), which interferes with ALL treatment plans.

Avoid Caffeine (except when it is used as an enema), because caffeine restricts the blood vessels, meaning less oxygen gets to the cancer cells. It is also acid-forming and mucus-forming.  This also applies to chocolate lovers who need to stop their chocolate habit.

Some Special Listed Foods

Peanuts are perhaps the number one food that should be avoided because they are so high in fungus. Foods that have little resistance to invaders, when they are growing, are frequently high in fungus.

Corn, rice (because of the way it is stored) and potatoes, and any foods with corn, rice or potatoes, should be avoided, also because of fungus and the way they are stored.

Cashews are another food high in fungus.

Avoid processed fruit juices.

Avoid oranges, tangerines, and dried fruits, for a variety of reasons.

Do not microwave any foods during a cancer diet.

Water and Exercise

Every cancer patient should drink as much natural water (i.e. natural spring water or natural artesian water, processed with ozone) as they can, at least two litres a day. The many benefits of water are beyond the scope of this article, but rest assured it is important to stay hydrated.

Also, a cancer patient should get as much exercise as reasonable. Exercise pumps the lymph system and helps get toxins out of the body. Even if a person can do no more than lift 3 pound weights for 10 minutes while sitting in a chair, it will help.

It is also good to sweat in order to release toxins, so take a sauna whenever possible.

The Liver

According to Dr. Max Gerson, and others, even before the symptoms of cancer appear, the liver is damaged. As the cancer progresses, the damage to the liver also progresses.

The liver is the major organ in the body which deals with toxins. A person on an alternative cancer treatment releases a lot of toxins into the blood stream which end up in the liver. Because of this, the liver must be “detoxified” or “cleansed.”

There are some alternative treatments that contain liver detoxification elements in the treatment itself. The grape cure, Essiac Tea, barley greens, and others, cleanse the liver along with the treatment.

There are also many herbs which “stimulate” or “detoxify” the liver. At the head of this list the most effective herb, as far as I know, is Milk Thistle.”

Several alternative cancer treatments specifically deal with the liver by using enemas. Coffee enemas are by far the most common and are part of the Kelley metabolic plan, the Gerson diet, the Hulda Clark treatment, and others. Coffee enemas are said to open the bile duct of the liver so that it quickly sends material into the colon for elimination.

The bottom line is that in designing a treatment plan, the care of cleaning the liver is critical. If the toxins in the liver build up and are not removed, it can cause the death of the liver, which means the death of the patient.

“The liver (among its many other functions) is the major organ of detoxification. Anything we can do to ease our toxic burden makes the liver’s job easier – including eating less, drinking more water, reducing intake of toxins, exercising more, eating more fibre, and so on. There are also a number of herbs that help the liver with its detoxification tasks. These include dandelion root, yellow dock, burdock, chickweed, barberry  and Milk Thistle– which are more effective when taken in combination than singly.”

Lymph System

Another thing that will ease the burden on the liver is the lymph system. The lymph system also helps remove toxins from the blood, but the lymph system does not have a “pump,” such as the circulatory system has (the “pump” of the circulatory system is the heart). The lymph system is only pumped by exercise.

Like the cardiovascular system, the lymphatic system is made up of channels or vessels, valves and filters (nodes). Unlike the bloodstream system, however, there is no pump like the heart. Instead, the lymphatic fluid is forced through the system by the action of the muscles and breathing, and to a certain extent, gravity.

The lymphatic system is critical to the immune system, to the treatment of cancer and to taking a burden off of the liver. Many cancer patients, for a variety of reasons, are in no condition to go for long walks, jog, or do other types of exercise.

The good news is that the arm muscles are just as good, and perhaps better, at pumping the lymphatic system as are the legs. Thus, lifting hand weights can accomplish much in helping the lymphatic system.

However, prior to cleansing the liver of toxins, the colon must be cleansed so that the toxins can be dumped into the colon!! This means that at the beginning of any alternative cancer treatment, there must be a colon cleanse.

“It is important to make sure that the colon is in good shape before stimulating the healing of the liver. If toxins cannot be excreted, the liver may store them, causing harm.”

Symptoms of a Severe Change in Diet

When you go on a natural treatment for cancer, such as the grape cure, hydrogen peroxide, raw food diet (i.e. carrot-based vegetable juice), etc. you can expect some strong reactions from the body.

Other foods and treatments can also yield these results.

Here are samples of things we have run into:

“After starting an alternative treatment program I had chemotherapy coming out the pores of my skin, even though it had been months since I had any. I had to take showers several times a day to wash this stuff off because it would burn my skin as it came out. It smelled putrid. It was just awful, the toxic stuff that was coming out of me.”

“Something else I noticed was that any time she had a bowel movement (which became quite frequent after the start of the diet) it was so foul smelling, almost like she was excreting rotten flesh!”

“He is doing well at taking everything as he is supposed to. My sister said that she noticed a foul odour ‘like it was coming out his pores’ last Sunday. She said it smelled horrible and was nauseating and unbearable.”

And if you are on a colon flush, it gets worse:

“He reported lumps of foul smelling substances that looked like ‘rotten hamburger’ flushing out of his colon, his urine was strong and dark, and he had occasional headaches.”

These symptoms, plus diarrhoea, constipation, etc. can all result from a massive change in diet or the treatment itself. They are common, they are normal and usually they are an indication that the treatment is working!

What Causes Cancer – Some Thoughts

What Causes Cancer

Many cancer patients have gone through these three steps:

1) The patient had chemotherapy, radiation and surgery to treat their cancer,
2) The patient was told they were “cancer free,”
3) Months later the cancer “came back,” which is called “regression.”

When talking about what causes cancer we need to talk about it at two different levels.

  1. The first level is at the systemic level, meaning what conditions in the body allowed the cancer to grow out of control and how to deal with this issue.
  1. The second level about cancer is what causes cancer at the cellular level. Why does a healthy cell become cancerous in the first place?

These two levels are totally different subjects

A cancer practitioner might research how to kill cancer cells or revert them into normal cells, but a cancer researcher might ask why the immune system was weak and why individual cells were cancerous.

What Causes Cancer – Systemic Level

Everyone has cancer cells in their body, so why does one person never get diagnosed with cancer and another person is diagnosed with cancer?

Cancer is almost always caused by the same multi-step sequence of events.

  1. Microbes and parasites get inside of organs and make their homes there. These microbes generally come from meat that was not adequately cooked, but they can come from other sources.
  2. These microbes intercept glucose which was headed for the cells in the organs.
  3. The microbes excrete (as waste products) mycotoxins, which are highly acid and totally worthless to the cells.
  4. The cells (in the organs) don’t get the food they need (because it has been intercepted), and because they are living in a sea of waste products (i.e. mycotoxins), the cells in the organ become weak.
  5. Organs are made exclusively of cells. In other words, if you took all of the cells out of an organ, there would be no organ. Thus, because the cells in the organ(s) are weak, the organ(s) are weak.
  6. Because one or more major organs are weak the immune system becomes weak.
  7. Because the immune system is weak it cannot kill enough cancer cells and the cancer cells grow out of control.

Thus, the “root cause” of cancer is microbes and parasites that are in the organs, colon or bloodstream, which weakens the immune system!!

However, other things can cause cancer. For example, a vaccination can weaken the immune system due to mercury and/or toxins. Waste in the colon can also lead to a weak immune system.

When thinking about the above steps, there are three major ways to deal with cancer:

1) Safely target and kill the cancer cells,

2) Kill the microbes inside the cancer cells and the cancer cells will revert into normal cells,

3) Kill the microbes that are causing the immune system to be weak (and this includes the microbes in the organs and the microbes in the bloodstream).

Without doing number 3, cancer could come back again.

Fixing the “Root Cause” of Cancer

While many natural cancer treatments do very well against cancer, what is missing in many natural cancer treatment protocols is getting rid of the microbes in the organs, which is the “root cause” of most cases of cancer.

In many cases the immune system can get rid of these microbes, but in fact some types of tapeworms, flukes and fungus, etc. cannot be killed by the immune system for one reason or another (e.g. the microbes are not accessible by the immune system).

Liver flushes and special nutrients may be required to deal with these microbes and parasites. But the fact is that many natural cancer treatments do very well without dealing with these special microbes.

By getting rid of the microbes in the organs, plus doing the normal cancer treatments, the balance (i.e. a strong immune system and a low number of cancer cells) is restored enough to keep the cancer from coming back. The person could be cured because their immune system has been fixed and the number of cancer cells has been reduced!!The cancer will not come back as long as the patient watches their diet.

The approach of orthodox medicine, however, is to severely damage the immune system with chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. This makes the imbalance even worse because they damage the immune system and do a very poor job of targeting the cancer cells and do an even worse job of killing the microbes in the organs.

Orthodox cancer treatments also kill many healthy cells and can damage organs, the lymph system, etc.

Is it any wonder the cancer always seems to “come back” after surgery or chemotherapy? This is called “regression.”

For example, how is cutting off a breast going to fix the immune system?

Most natural cancer treatments include immune builders and things that kill cancer cells. Some protocols also include things to clean the blood of microbes, which will also supercharge the immune system.

Even when orthodox medicine puts someone into “remission” (i.e. their cancer appears to be gone), they have not fixed the “root cause” of the cancer, so it is almost certain the cancer will come back!! That is why the true “five-year” cure rate of orthodox medicine is less than 3%.

Because the “root cause” of cancer is a weak immune system, YOU CANNOT CUT CANCER OUT, you have to deal with the “root cause” of the cancer!!!

Even in Natural Medicine the Cancer Can Come Back

Many natural cancer treatments, whether cancer treatments that kill the cancer cells or even revert the cancer cells into normal cells, can have significant regression rates!!

One reason is that the microbes in the organs and/or bloodstream were not identified and destroyed.

In other words, even natural cancer treatments that kill cancer cells or revert cancer cells into normal cells can have the cancer return!! If natural cancer treatments don’t fix the “root cause” of the cancer, by cleaning the blood, and especially the organs of microbes and parasites, the cancer can come back.

What Causes Cancer – Cellular Level – Part 1

How does a normal cell, which is not cancerous, become cancerous?

In a normal cell, molecules called ATP (adenosine triphosphate) provide the energy of the cell. ATP molecules are created inside the mitochondria which are inside of every human cell. In fact, there are thousands of mitochondria inside of every human cell.

The very definition of a cancer cells is low ATP energy!!

The normal (Highly Simplified) process of creating ATP molecules is this:

1) Glucose gets inside the cell from the bloodstream,

2) Some of the glucose is converted into pyruvate,

3) Pyruvate gets inside the mitochondria,

4) Once inside the mitochondria, pyruvate is at the beginning of two sequential chemical reactions. It is these two cycles which create most of the ATP molecules in the cell.

Cancer cells consume 15 times more glucose than a normal cell. Thus, a person would logically expect a cancer cell to create 15 times more ATP molecules than a normal cell.

But in reality, cancer cells create a very small number of ATP molecules!! Cancer cells are ATP molecule starved and they have to revert to fermentation to create what little ATP molecules they create.

With so much glucose there should be an abundance of ATP molecules!! Why do cancer cells consume15 times more glucose and yet not be able to create a significant amount of ATP molecules?

The thing that blocks the production of ATP molecules is a very special pleomorphic bacteria that is inside the cancer cells!!.

Researchers believe the microbe is Helicobacter Pylorior. In some cases, Fusobacterium may be involved as well, as it is also known to get inside of cells.

While everyone has H. pylori bacteria in their body (generally in their digestive tract), how does H. pylori get inside of a healthy cell? Generally it doesn’t. But in some cases an acidic diet can make bacteria highly aggressive and it can literally drill itself into a normal cell to get away from the acidity in the blood, as discovered by Robert O. Young, PhD.

Another way microbes can get inside of cells is because asbestos or the chemicals in tobacco cut the cell membrane. This can allow microbes inside the cells. But remember that even though all of us have cancer cells; don’t forget we also have an immune system.

So how does a bacterium block the production of ATP molecules and thus turn a cell cancerous after it has gotten inside the cell?

The bacteria blocks ATP production in two different ways:

First, bacteria eat glucose, so as the bacteria proliferate inside the cell they intercept more and more glucose. This means less and less pyruvate is made because there is less glucose to be converted into pyruvate. This means less ATP is made!!

Second, microbes excrete mycotoxins, which are highly acidic and totally worthless molecules.

Both items contribute to the mitochondria not obtaining enough pyruvate and this hinders the chain reaction that blocks the production of an adequate amount of ATP in the mitochondria.

In any case, due to the lack of energy in cancer cells (i.e. due to the lack of ATP molecules), cancer cells are very weak, which is the definition of a cancer cell. But because cancer cells steal glucose from the body the non-cancerous cells have less glucose and are very sick!! They are sick for other reasons as well (e.g. cachexia cycle as cancer cells excrete lactic acid).

One method that cancer cells use to spread quickly (at least for some kinds of cancer) is for the cancer microbe to come out of the cell, travel through the blood and create a new “colony” of cancer cells far from the original colony.

This is just the beginning.

The cancer microbe also excretes enzymes that coat the outside of the cancer cells. This coating of enzymes blocks the immune system from identifying the cancer cells as being cancer cells!!

It was also discovered, around the 1950s, that natural pancreatic enzymes, made in the pancreas, could dissolve this protein coating so the immune system could identify and thus kill the cancer cells.

This discovery in turn led to the advice that natural cancer treatments should prohibit the cancer patient from eating meats or other foods that the pancreatic enzymes cut apart. In other words, these foods “use up” the pancreatic enzymes while in the stomach so less of them are available to expose cancer cells to the immune system.

When a cancer patient is using pancreatic enzymes in their protocol, they should not eat meat or dairy products. In fact, no cancer patient should eat very much meat and they should not eat or drink any dairy products (for multiple reasons) or sugar.

It gets worse. Dr. Matthias Rath discovered that these microbes excrete enzymes that “cut a path” along tissue so the cancer can spread more easily along tissue

In summary, cancer at the systemic level is caused by an imbalance between the strength of the immune system and the number of cancer cells. At the systemic level many, things can cause cancer, especially things that weaken the immune system. A weak immune system is almost always caused by microbes and parasites which are inside organs, but are not necessarily inside the cancer cells.

But cancer at the cellular level is caused by very unique and common microbes which are inside the cancer cells. These microbes help cancer cells do their damage and also protect themselves!!

Additionally, cancer cells create and excrete large amounts of lactic acid because they process large amounts of glucose inefficiently. This lactic acid goes into the bloodstream and gets to the liver. The liver converts the lactic acid to glucose. This “ping pong ball” cycle, where the cancer cells convert glucose into lactic acid and the liver converts lactic acid into glucose, is called the “lactic acid cycle” or “cachexia cycle.”

This cycle is what kills about half of all cancer patients because so much energy is consumed at both ends of the cycle. The patient becomes very weak and eventually dies.

Lactic acid also blocks many key nutrients from getting to the cancer cells!!

Dealing with the lactic-acid cycle is frequently a major effort of a cancer treatment. It may involve using hydrazine sulphate, Methyl-Sulphonal-Methane MSM (which helps flush the lactic acid out), D-Ribose (to get energy to the non-cancerous cells), Vitamin C (ditto), etc.

What Causes Cancer – Cellular Level – Part 2

One possibility is DNA damage where the DNA damage causes defective proteins and the defective proteins cause a loss of some ATP energy.

However, it is doubtful that more than a few thousand cancer patients worldwide have cancer caused by DNA damage.

But it is almost certain that certain chemicals, i.e. asbestos, can cause cancer. It is almost certain that asbestos causes cancer by cutting the sides of cells, thus allowing bacteria to get inside the cancer cells more readily. Let’s talk more about the possibility of DNA damage causing cancer.

Orthodox medicine claims that ALL cancer is caused by DNA damage. However, in theory in rare cases DNA damage may cause cancer.

Take the famous BRCA2 gene as an example. Can a defect in this gene cause cancer? It is not clear whether the BRCA2 gene is a cause of cancer or that the microbes inside the cancer cells cause the BRCA2 gene damage. Orthodox medicine would never examine this issue because they are looking to sell drugs, not save lives.

Let’s talk about the BRCA2 gene defect. A DNA strand is between 3.2 billion and 3.5 billion nucleotides long. Only a very small percentage of DNA codes is for proteins, about 3%. Only a very small percentage of these proteins are involved with the creation of ATP energy. The proteins of interest are the proteins needed for the conversion of glucose to pyruvate.

In other words, we are only interested in the structures inside the cells which are involved in the conversion of glucose to pyruvate.

It is possible, but highly unlikely, that DNA damage could affect one of the proteins needed for the creation of ATP energy.

As the cell with this DNA damage divides, all of the “daughter” cells” will have this same genetic damage.

So how does a bad gene create a cancer cell? In a cell, genes are the patterns used to make enzymes or proteins. If a gene is damaged then the enzymes or proteins made by this gene will be defective.

Everything that goes on in a cell is controlled by proteins. There are worker proteins, supervisor proteins, etc. If these are damaged then one or more of the large number of chemical chain reactions inside the cell may fail. This may mean the creation of ATP is damaged.

If a significant amount of ATP energy production is blocked inside the cell, then by definition the cell is cancerous.

So how exactly could the BRCA1 or BRCA2 defective genes cause cancer? The truth is that no one really knows whether these defective genes cause cancer at all. In order for these defects to cause cancer they must create defective proteins that are needed in the conversion of glucose to pyruvate.

A genetic defect may have absolutely nothing to do with the creation of pyruvate. In other words, genetic defects may be a symptom of the cancer, meaning this damage may be caused by the DNA of the microbes which are actually causing the cancer.

These defects cannot block the ATP production completely or the cell would fall apart. So we do know it must be a partial interference if at all.

Focusing on the Microbes Inside the Cancer Cells

Have there been any cancer treatments that cured cancer by killing the microbes inside the cancer cells?

In the 1930s Dr. Royal Rife, a microbiologist, was able to cure cancer with gentle electro medicine, which had two frequencies. One frequency was designed to kill the cancer bacteria and the second frequency was a “carrier” frequency which got the other frequency through the cell membrane (and actually through the entire body) to get inside the cancer cells to kill the microbes.

Dr. Rife had a 100% cure rate of cancer patients, but he was shut down by the FDA after refusing to sell his technology to the American Medical Association which he knew would bury his technology.

Two modern day “Rife Machines” have replicated both of the types of “Rife Machines” that Rife built. These are the High RF Frequency Generator family of very gentle electro medicine devices, which were mentioned above.

The Independent Cancer Research Foundation, Inc. (ICRF) researches both electro medicine protocols (such as Rife developed) and has also designed several cancer treatments using: DMSO, MSM, honey, maple syrup or molasses as carriers (i.e. Trojan Horses) to get microbe killing substances inside of cancer cells. These treatments have been very successful.

If you kill the microbes inside the cancer cells, the cancer cells will REVERT into normal cells.

DMSO is used to get these microbe-killing substances inside the cancer cells.

In Atlanta, Georgia a medical doctor was curing cancer patients using DMSO and very low dose chemotherapy (about 10% of a normal dose). Why was such a low dose so successful? Because the DMSO allowed the chemotherapy to target the cancers cells and avoid damaging healthy cells!! This doctor was shut down by the FDA.

Using DMSO in a cancer clinic in the United States is a magnet to get the FDA to raid the clinic.

Vitamin C, which also kills microbes, is also used as an I.V. for cancer patients.

There are likely many natural molecules which cure cancer by killing the microbes inside the cancer cells, but which have not yet been identified as working in this manner.

Vitamin C and Vitamin D3 are good examples. These are highly anti-microbial vitamins which cannot possibly kill cancer cells, so the only way they can treat cancer is by killing the microbes inside the cancer cells (in the case of Vitamin C, hydrogen peroxide is also made).

The number one plant or herb in the world, which has been identified as successfully killing H. pylori is turmeric. Turmeric is also one of the top herbal treatments for cancer!! You can combine turmeric (or curcumin, which is more powerful) with honey. Ginger is also used with honey. Both of these combinations are known to have cured cancer by themselves!!

It is much easier to kill microbes than to kill cancer cells, if the substance can get inside of the cancer cells. DMSO, MSM and honey are all “Trojan Horses” to get microbe-killing substances inside of cancer cells. Maple syrup or molasses is also commonly used with baking soda and has been very successful!!

The Immune System

A normal person will not be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. The reason is that there is enough of a balance between the power of their immune system and the number of cancer cells such that the cancer cells do not get out of control.

However, what most people do not understand is how sophisticated and potent the immune system is if it is fully functioning.

Natural medicine can supercharge the immune system beyond imagination. But orthodox medicine rarely work with natural medicine researchers, but orthodox medicine researchers control 99.999% of the research money. So while much is known about how to supercharge the immune system (natural medicine), little is known about what the immune system “looks like” when it is supercharged (orthodox medicine).

It is a fact that if a person’s immune system was fully functional no one would ever get cancer. This would be a scenario that orthodox medicine never wants to see. BIG PHARMA

What is known is that the immune system creates two key anti-cancer molecules called: interleukin and interferon. These molecules are called neuropeptides or nerve proteins. There are more than 2,000 different types of neuropeptides in the body, but the cancer-fighting effects of most of them are unknown.

In fact, no one knows how many different types of neuropeptides could be created by the body.

Interleukin and interferon, and likely several other neuropeptides, are absolutely deadly to cancer cells!!

The problem is that the human body generally does not produce an optimal amount of these neuropeptides. In fact, the body only creates a very small number of neuropeptides.

The reason is microbes, but not the same microbes that live inside cancer cells. It is the microbes that live outside of the cancer cells.

The average person has about 2 pounds of microbes in their bloodstream and in other places in their body. It is these microbes which interfere with the immune system’s ability to create key neuropeptides.

Junk Foods

Many people say that sugar and other junk foods “cause cancer.” Well, to some degree that is true.

What junk foods do is put high levels of highly concentrated acidic foods in the body. Microbes LOVE an acidic environment!!

Thus, junk foods create the perfect environment for the microbes that are in the bloodstream, the microbes in the organs and even the microbes inside the cancer cells!!

That is why “cancer diets” avoid highly acidic foods and focus on whole (i.e. unprocessed), alkaline foods.

How To Deal With Cancer

In summary, there are several ways to deal with cancer:

1) You can safely and gently kill cancer cells with nutrients, such as laetrile or Vitamin B17,

2) You can safely and gently kill the microbes which are inside the cancer cells with DMSO, MSM, honey, as Trojan Horses, and electro-medicine.

3) You can safely and gently kill the microbes which are in the bloodstream and thus supercharge the immune system to create interleukin and interferon and other neuropeptides, which in turn kill the cancer cells

4) You can target and kill the parasites and microbes in the organs, which will also help supercharge the immune system. This is called a “liver flush” because the most important parasites are in the liver. There are many generic liver flushes.

5) You can supercharge the immune system with nutrients. This can also cure cancer though it does not work as fast as some of the other treatments. Many natural plants have been identified which can build the immune system without killing all of the microbes in the bloodstream

6) You can block the “lactic acid cycle” with hydrazine sulphate (this is not a direct cure, but it extends the life of the patient so other treatments have longer to work),

7) You can supercharge the non-cancerous cells with nutrients and minerals. Note: this is not a direct cure, but is very commonly used to extend the life of the patient until other treatments can become effective.

A typical cancer treatment will actually do three or four of the above things and maybe all seven of them.

In summary, cancer is a systemic disease.

It is caused by microbes in the organs (which weaken the immune system), microbes inside the cancer cells (which block the production of ATP energy), microbes in the bloodstream (which block the immune system), and so the cycle continues.

DMSO -Miracle Stuff

DMSO

There’s a compound called DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide), that has the power to relieve pain, diminish swelling, reduce inflammation, encourage healing, restore normal cell function — and eliminate scar tissue.

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a simple by-product of the wood industry, is the compound that even doctors are calling a “wonderful medical miracle.” It was first synthesized by Russian scientist Alexander Zaytzeff in 1866. But it wasn’t until after World War II that chemists began to discover that DMSO could dissolve almost anything and carry any dissolved substances along with it.

DMSO’s medicinal properties came to light in 1961 when Dr. Stanley Jacob, head of the organ transplant program at Oregon Health Sciences University investigated DMSO’s potential as a preservative for organs, he discovered that it had the ability to penetrate the skin quickly and deeply — without damaging the skin.

Indeed, it has been observed that if someone were to apply a small amount of the DMSO liquid on the sole of their foot, it would penetrate through the skin and all other material in the body with extreme speed that they would “taste” the DMSO in their mouth almost instantly.

Dimethyl sulfoxide is said to be more “liquid” than water and has been shown to penetrate areas in the body that nothing else can reach as fast. Because it moves rapidly through cell membranes, it has been called “water’s alter ego.” It changes the water structure within the cell, increases cellular permeability, and accelerates the living processes of the cell … thereby allowing healing to occur at unprecedented speed.

DMSO uses include:

  • relieve pain and swelling
    • relax muscles
    • relieve arthritis
    • improve blood supply
    • slow the growth of bacteria.

In an article entitled “DMSO As a Solvent,” Dr. Ron Kennedy states, “It relieves the pain of sprains and even of broken bones. It enhances the effectiveness of other pharmacological agents. If you apply DMSO to a bruise, the bruise dissolves and disappears in a matter of minutes! If you apply it to the jaw after wisdom tooth removal, all pain and swelling is prevented! The pain of acute gout can be handled with the application of 5 cc of seventy percent DMSO in water four times each day. Application to a fever blister results in rapid resolution of this problem. DMSO also relieves the pain of minor burns and if applied soon after the burn happens, will decrease the tissue damage suffered.

DMSO speeds all healing, approximately doubling or tripling all healing responses.”

In addition to providing great relief for sufferers of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, burns, sprains, back and neck problems, DMSO also delivers antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal effects.

  • If administered intravenously within 90 minutes of a stroke, it prevents permanent damage to the central nervous system.
    • When applied topically, repeatedly, it flattens a raised scar. It also prevents the contraction of scar tissue that accompanies burns.
    • Studies show that it protects against the tissue damage induced by radioactivity.
    • It is used as an excellent antifreeze, preventing tissue damage ordinarily caused by freezing conditions.
    • It minimizes the swelling of the brain and spinal cord following traumatic injury.

In 1972, the painkilling ability of DMSO attracted media attention when Dr. Jacob administered it to US Governor George Wallace. Wallace had been wounded in an assassination attempt while campaigning for the Democratic nomination for President. As a result, he was wheelchair-bound and afflicted with pain. His pain reportedly disappeared after applying DMSO daily over the affected area.

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) has been used most widely as a topical analgesic, in a solution consisting of 70% DMSO and 30% water. Laboratory studies show that DMSO cuts pain by blocking peripheral nerve fibres. Relief from the pain of burns, cuts, and sprains has been reported to be almost immediate, lasting up to 6 hours.

DMSO is also widely used in sports medicine. Professional sports organizations, in particular, use it to get their athletes recovered from injury and back on the playing field rapidly

Despite overwhelming evidence pointing to DMSO’s therapeutic benefits, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) refuses to approve the use or prescription of DMSO for anything other than the treatment of a bladder condition called interstitial cystitis. That’s in spite of the fact that DMSO is known to be safer than aspirin.

Legally, dimethyl sulfoxide is sold commercially only as a solvent. However, that hasn’t stopped osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis sufferers from using it with regularity, often at the recommendation of fellow arthritis sufferers. Only medical grade — never industrial grade — should be used on the human body.

DMSO – Simply Put

  • DMSO is a simple small molecule with amazing chemical, physical and biological characteristics.
  • Hydroxyl radicals (OH) are throughout the body and are highly injurious to health. DMSO combines with, and neutralises these biological time bombs which can literally explode individual cells. DMSO combines with the hydroxyl free radicals, adds water, which are then excretes through the kidneys in the urine.
  • DMSO is a free radical scavenger and is useful in the treatment of many conditions such as cancer, arthritis and arteriosclerosis.
  • DMSO substitutes for water in the living cell and, because of this property can heal the sick cell by destroying free radicals within the cell.
  • DMSO increases the permeability of cell membranes allowing a flushing of toxins from the cell.
  • Allergic reactions are decreased by DMSO which increases the body’s resistance to infection.

THE BIOLOGY OF BELIEF

The Biology of Belief

The ‘central dogma’ of modern orthodox biology is that life is controlled by genes. In The Biology of Belief, cell biologist Bruce Lipton explains how the latest research has shown genetic determinism to be fundamentally flawed, and presents a very readable account of the ‘new biology’. He says that research into the way cells receive and process information shows that a cell’s life is controlled not by its genes but by the physical and energetic environment, which, in the case of humans, includes our thoughts. He writes:

‘The belief that we are frail biochemical machines controlled by genes is giving way to an understanding that we are powerful creators of our lives and the world in which we live’.

The ‘new’ biology is an advance on the old one but, it still has severe limitations.

Genetic delusions

Since the cracking of the genetic code by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953, DNA has assumed an all-powerful status. At first it was thought to be responsible only for our physical characteristics, but then scientists started claiming that our genes control our emotions and behaviour as well. Lipton says that genes are simply molecular blueprints used in the construction of cells, tissues, and organs. But even this goes too far: genes are blueprints for the production of proteins – how proteins assemble themselves into cells, tissues, and organs is not understood.

Prior to the Human Genome Project, scientists held that one gene was needed to provide the blueprint for each of the over 100,000 different proteins that make up our bodies. Since there are also over 20,000 regulatory genes, the human genome was expected to contain a minimum of 120,000 genes located in the 23 pairs of chromosomes. However, geneticists were shocked to discover that the human genome consists of only about 25,000 genes. More than 80% of the DNA that was thought to be required does not exist! The one-gene, one-protein concept, which was a fundamental tenet of genetic determinism, has therefore had to be consigned to the scrap heap.

There is not much difference in the total number of genes found in humans and in primitive organisms. The microscopic nematode roundworm has a body consisting of 969 cells and a simple brain of about 302 cells, yet its genome consists of as many as 24,000 genes. This means that the human body, comprising over 50 trillion cells, contains only 1000 more genes than this lowly worm. The fruit fly has 15,000 genes – 9000 fewer than the more primitive worm. Humans have roughly the same number of genes as mice!

Nobel Prize winner David Baltimore has said, ‘it is clear that we do not gain our undoubted complexity over worms and plants by using more genes.

Darwinism and Epigenetics

Lipton argues that genes cannot control life because they cannot turn themselves on or off. That is done by signals from the cellular environment. Epigenetics, the study of the molecular mechanisms by which the environment controls gene activity, is today one of the most active areas of scientific research. Environmental influences, including nutrition, stress, and emotions can modify genes, without changing their basic blueprint, and these modifications can be passed on to future generations. DNA makes up only half the content of chromosomes; the other half consists of regulatory proteins, which are turning out to play as crucial a role in heredity as DNA. Studies of protein synthesis reveal that epigenetic factors can create 2000 or more variations of proteins from the same gene.

Biologists’ central dogma posits the ‘primacy of DNA’, involving a one-way flow of information from DNA to RNA to proteins. Lipton, on the other hand, argues for the ‘primacy of the environment’. Regulatory genes direct the activity of protein-encoding genes, but environmental signals control how regulatory proteins bind to DNA. The flow of information is therefore: environmental signal – regulatory protein – DNA – RNA – protein. Information can also flow in the reverse direction, but subject to tight restrictions: RNA can rewrite DNA, protein antibodies can change DNA, and changes in DNA influence the binding of regulatory proteins.

Evidence for the role of epigenetic mechanisms has become so compelling that some scientists have started speaking favourably again of Jean-Baptiste de Lamarck (1744-1829), the much-scorned evolutionist who believed that traits acquired as result of environmental influence could sometimes be passed on to offspring. So, information can be transmitted to descendants in ways other than through the base sequence of DNA.

Traditional Darwinism sees evolution as essentially random, purposeless, and violently competitive, Lamarck suggested that evolution was based on cooperative interaction among organisms and their environment. In Darwin’s Blind Spot (2002), Frank Ryan chronicles a number of striking examples of cooperation among organisms. For instance, there is a yellow shrimp that gathers food while its partner gobi fish protects it from predators. There is also a species of hermit crab that carries a pink anemone on top of its shell. Fish and octopuses like to feed on hermit crabs, but when they approach this species, the anemone shoots out its brilliantly coloured tentacles, with their microscopic batteries of poisoned darts, and stings the potential predator. In return, the anemone eats the crab’s leftover food.

We now know that genes are transferred between members of the same species and of different species. This highlights the dangers of genetic engineering. Tinkering with the genes of a tomato, for example, could alter the entire biosphere in unforeseen ways. One study has shown that when humans digest genetically modified foods, the artificially created genes transfer into and alter the beneficial bacteria in the intestine. Similarly, gene transfer among genetically engineered agricultural crops and surrounding native species has given rise to highly resistant super-weeds. As Lipton says, scientists are messing around with our genes and environment without understanding how interconnected everything is.

Cells, brains, membranes

Although cells appear to be anatomically simple, they display incredible complexity and power, and employ technologies that scientists have barely begun to understand. Like humans, single cells analyze thousands of stimuli from the microenvironment they inhabit, and select appropriate behavioural responses to ensure their survival. They are even capable of altering their own genes.

Lipton rejects the orthodox idea that the nucleus is the cell’s brain. If their nuclei and genes are removed, cells can survive for up to two months or more. They continue to exhibit complex, coordinated, life-sustaining behaviours, but eventually die – not because they have lost their brain but because they have lost their reproductive capabilities and are unable to replace failed proteins or replicate themselves. In other words, the nucleus is the cell’s reproductive organ

Lipton proposes that the true brain controlling cellular life is the membrane. The membrane is a semi-permeable, three-layered skin, only seven millionths of a millimetre thick, which holds the contents of a cell together. But behind its apparent simplicity lies great functional complexity. For instance, prokaryotes, which include bacteria and other microbes, consist of a cell membrane enveloping a droplet of cytoplasm, yet they display ‘intelligence’. They can sense the presence of food and propel themselves towards it, and they can recognize toxins and predators and take evasive action.

Instead of the cell’s operations being controlled by DNA blueprints stored in the nucleus, as conventional biology would have us believe, Lipton proposes that this is done by integral membrane proteins (IMPs) – which include awareness and action proteins. The membrane’s action proteins, operating in response to molecular and radiant-energy signals which its receptors pick up from the environment, control the ‘reading’ of genes so that worn-out proteins can be replaced or new proteins created.

The cell’s operations are therefore primarily moulded by its interaction with the environment, not by its genetic code. Genes cannot pre-program a cell or an organism’s life, because cell survival depends on the ability to dynamically adjust to an ever-changing environment.

In Lipton’s view, the membrane’s function of interacting ‘intelligently’ with the environment to produce behaviour makes it the true brain of the cell; if the membrane is destroyed, the cell dies. In multi-cellular organisms key functions of the membrane are taken over by specialized tissues and organs – nervous system, lungs, muscles, etc.

Drugs and health

Millions of people attribute failing health not to a combination of mental, physical, and emotional causes, but simply to the inadequacies of their body’s biochemical mechanics. Increasingly, the first choice in dealing with unruly children, for example, is to medicate them to correct their ‘chemical imbalances’, rather than grappling with what is truly going on in their bodies and minds.

Although scientists have linked lots of genes to lots of different diseases and traits, they have rarely found that one gene causes a particular disease or trait. Lipton points out that the diseases that are today’s scourges – diabetes, heart disease, and cancer – are not the result of a single gene, but of complex interactions among multiple genes and environmental factors. Only 5% of cancer and cardiovascular patients can attribute their disease to heredity.

He argues that drugs and surgery are powerful tools when not overused, but the notion of simple drug fixes is fundamentally flawed. Every time a drug is introduced into the body to correct function A, it inevitably throws off function B, C, or D. That is why pharmaceutical drugs come with information sheets listing numerous side effects, ranging from irritating to deadly. People who take over-the-counter antihistamines, for example, may experience allergy relief but also the side effect of feeling drowsy.

Synthetic HRT has been shown to have disturbing side effects that result in cardiovascular disease and neural dysfunctions such as strokes.

According to a recent study, iatrogenic illness – illness resulting from medical treatment – is the leading cause of death in the US, and adverse reactions to prescription drugs are responsible for more than 300,000 deaths a year.

We have been programmed by pharmaceutical corporations to become a nation of prescription drug-popping junkies with tragic results. … Using prescription drugs to silence a body’s symptoms.

Research suggests that our hyper-vigilant lifestyle has a severe impact on the health of our bodies. Almost every major illness is linked to chronic stress, and the inhibition of neuronal growth by stress hormones can lead to depression.

Lipton argues that far more money should be spent on research into alternative medicine, such as acupuncture, chiropractic, homeopathy, and massage therapy, which are based on the belief that ‘energy fields’ help to control our physiology and health.

Mind over matter

The well-known placebo effect dramatically demonstrates the healing power of the mind: ‘fake’ drugs often prove just as effective as genuine chemical cocktails, provided patients believe they are receiving the ‘real thing’. The placebo effect has proved powerful in treating various diseases, including asthma and Parkinson’s disease. In a study of severely depressed patients, 50% of those taking drugs improved but so did 32% of those taking a placebo. In more than half the clinical trials for the six leading antidepressants, the drugs did not outperform placebo sugar pills.

Interestingly, antidepressants have performed better and better in clinical trials over the years, suggesting that slick marketing has produced a placebo effect, demonstrating that beliefs are contagious!

In a study of patients with severe knee pain, those who received surgery improved, but those in the placebo group (incisions were made in their knees and then sewed up) improved just as much.

The opposite of the placebo effect is the nocebo effect. Negative thinking – including the hope-deflating messages that physicians sometimes convey to their patients – can damage health. For instance, a man suffering from cancer of the oesophagus – a condition considered at the time to be 100% fatal – died a few weeks after his diagnosis, yet an autopsy found that there was not enough cancer in his body to kill him. Our positive and negative beliefs impact not only our health, but every aspect of our lives.

In 1952 Dr Albert Mason, a British physician, used hypnosis to successfully treat a very severe case of warts, which covered most of a 15-year-old boy’s body. Mason was later shocked to learn that the boy was not in fact suffering from warts but from a lethal genetic disease called congenital ichthyosis. This shows that the mind can even override genetic programming. Mason tried to cure a number of other ichthyosis patients but never with the same success. He attributed this to his own irrepressible doubts about the ability of hypnosis to cure this genetic condition – in contrast to simple warts.

According to germ theory, bacteria and viruses are the cause of disease. This theory was developed in the 19th century and was initially very controversial. One critic was so convinced it was wrong that he brazenly gulped down a glass of water laced with vibrio cholerae, the bacteria thought to cause cholera. Astonishingly, the man’s belief was so strong that he was completely unaffected by the virulent pathogen!

Another demonstration of mind over matter is fire walking: thousands of people have managed to walk across hot coals, while those who waver in their beliefs suffer burns. There are also many unexplained cases of terminal cancer patients recovering their lives through spontaneous remissions.

Lipton says that thoughts directly influence how the physical brain controls the body’s physiology. Thought ‘energy’ can activate or inhibit the cell’s function-producing proteins … The fact is that harnessing the power of your mind can be more effective than the drugs you have been programmed to believe you need.

He stresses that this requires not just positive thinking, but also eliminating the habitually negative and self-sabotaging thought patterns of the sub-conscious mind.

Energy and spirit

The ‘new biology’ is still essentially a materialistic theory, which seeks to explain everything in terms of physical matter-energy. Although Lipton describes himself as having been transformed from an agnostic scientist into ‘a card-carrying mystic who believes that eternal life transcends the body’, his interpretation of ‘spirit’ and ‘immortality’ remains very limited.

His acceptance of the reality of many paranormal phenomena is a step in the right direction:

Discovery after discovery about the mechanics of chemical signals … cannot explain paranormal phenomena. Spontaneous healings, psychic phenomena, amazing feats of strength and endurance, the ability to walk across hot coals without getting burned, acupuncture’s ability to diminish pain by moving ‘chi’ around the body, and many other paranormal phenomena defy Newtonian biology.

The main problem is that he equates ‘spirit’ and ‘mind’ with ‘energy’, but he seems to accept only conventional forms of energy, such as electromagnetic energy (e.g. radio waves, microwaves, visible light, and very low-frequency radiation) and acoustic energy. He claims that electromagnetic radiation is sufficient to explain not only protein folding and shape-shifting, and gene regulation, but also morphogenesis (the process by which cells form themselves into organs and tissues).

More radical biologists such as Rupert Sheldrake, on the other hand, argue that previously unrecognized causal factors – like ‘morphic fields’ – are required to explain such phenomena. The same applies to instincts and the self=conscious mind.

Lipton, however, speaks of instinctive behaviours being passed on to offspring ‘in the form of genetic-based instincts’ – yet there is no serious evidence that DNA encodes habits. He regards the mind as ‘immaterial energy’ seated in the prefrontal cortex of the brain, and does not appear to believe that it can exist independently of the body. He endorses the conventional Darwinian view that the evolution of higher mammals somehow brought forth self-consciousness, and declares that the ‘awareness-action protein complex’ is ‘the fundamental unit of awareness/intelligence’, ignoring the possibility that mind works through physical forms and structures from more ethereal levels of reality.

By contrast, according to ancient-wisdom tradition, consciousness is not magically generated by matter but is the ultimate ground of the universe; consciousness-life-substance is an eternal and universal unitary essence, manifesting in infinite degrees of density and in endlessly varied forms. The physical world is therefore the outer shell of inner worlds, composed of subtler grades of energy-substance (astral, mental, and spiritual), which are imperceptible to our normal senses but just as material to the entities that inhabit them as our own world is to us.

Likewise, the physical body is animated and organized by inner ‘bodies’ – such as an astral model-body, a reincarnating soul or mind, and a spiritual-divine self or monad. Strong support for this worldview is provided by a broad body of scientific research in fields such as fundamental physics, ‘new energy’, psychic and consciousness-related phenomena, and memories of past lives.

Materialized mysticism

Lipton says: ‘We are immortal, spiritual beings who exist separately from our bodies’). Although this sounds very radical and progressive, what he has in mind turns out to be far more mundane than the existence of an immortal soul: ‘We are mortal and following our demise, … our corporeal remains will be consumed and recycled back to the environment’’.

Lipton does, however, go one step further, saying that just as a television set picks up broadcasts transmitted through the air, so our self-identity is generated by information present in the external environment, which is downloaded by our cells’ receptors.

He sees evidence that an individual’s ‘broadcast’, or ‘self’, is still present even after death in the fact that patients who have received organ transplants sometimes report behavioural and psychological changes.

For instance, one conservative, health-conscious American was astonished when she developed a taste for beer, chicken nuggets, and motorcycles after her heart-lung transplant. Her donor turned out to be a young motorcycle enthusiast who loved chicken nuggets and beer.

In another case, a young girl began having nightmares of murder after her heart transplant, and her dreams were so vivid they led to the capture of the murderer who killed her donor.

Lipton offers the following explanation: the transplanted organs still bear the original identity receptors of the donor and are apparently still downloading that same environmental information. Even though the body of the person who donated the organs is dead, their broadcast is still on.

But what is the nature of this ‘environmental information’? How does it originate and where is it stored? Lipton seems to be saying that it takes the form of electromagnetic radiation in our physical environment! He adds that each of us downloads only a narrow band of the spectrum, which in its totality constitutes ‘God’.

According to ancient wisdom, every physical object or entity, from atom to human to galaxy, has a more ethereal inner constitution in which memories can reside. This means that if an organ is transplanted into another person, that person may under certain conditions tap into the memories associated with it.

Lipton, however, rejects the notion of ‘cellular memory’, since he does not recognize the existence of astral bodies or of nonphysical forms of energy-substance of any kind.

He suggests that cell and organ transplants offer a model not only for ‘immortality’ but also for reincarnation:

Consider the possibility that an embryo in the future displays the same set of identity receptors that I now possess. That embryo will be tuned into my ‘self.’ My identity is back but playing through a different body.

He postulates the existence of some sort of ‘environmental controller’ or ‘spirit’, from which we receive information and to which we relay our experiences, so that the way we live our lives influences our present character or that of someone in the future who picks up the same ‘information’. This interaction, he says, ‘corresponds to the concept of karma’!

Lipton’s narrow interpretation of reincarnation and karma is a very feeble and distorted echo of the teachings to be found in genuine mystical traditions of the East and West.

Instead of an ill-defined ‘spirit’, which somehow generates and maybe even consists of electromagnetic energy, and whose origin, locality, and end are left hanging in the air by Lipton, theosophy posits a series of inner bodies or souls of nonphysical grades of energy-substance, the lower ones eventually dissipating after death in the physical and astral realms, while our higher aspects endure for far longer.

All our thoughts, deeds, and experiences are recorded in these various consciousness vehicles or souls, just as all events leave an imprint in the inner realms, and karma refers to nature’s fundamental tendency to restore equilibrium by following every action with an appropriate reaction, directed at whoever was responsible for the original action.

In other words, we reap what we sow.

Lipton’s, earth-bound brand of mysticism rules out the progressive evolution of the same essential individuality from life to life.

According to the wisdom tradition, on the other hand, reincarnating souls return to earth again and again, enabling us to learn from our mistakes and gradually unfold our higher potential. The new astral and physical bodies that the soul works through in each life contain many of the same atoms used in the past, which carry the record of its previous personalities.

On every level of our being, we are exactly what we have made ourselves; what we inherit is our own past. That past is often something of a burden, but we always have sufficient free will to begin to change ourselves for the better.

Physical heredity is not simply a question of genetic determinism, with our genetic makeup ultimately being a result of chance. Rather, it involves a soul being attracted to parents who can provide the physical body and environment best suited to its karmic needs.

Physical DNA merely contains the code for the proteins that form the building blocks of our physical bodies. It does not govern the building of our bodies, nor does it determine our basic habits and character traits – these reflect processes taking place in our inner astral and mental bodies.

Lipton’s attitude to evolution is similarly very limited. He argues that there is more cooperation in nature than traditional Darwinism allows, that organisms respond ‘intelligently’ to their environment, and that the hereditary transmission of characteristics does not depend solely on DNA. But random mutations, environmental pressures, and epigenetic factors are not sufficient to explain the incredible diversity and complexity of earth’s life-forms, or how new types of fully functional organisms tend to appear in the fossil record incredibly quickly. Nor do they explain the emergence of self-consciousness.

The wisdom tradition offers a much broader vision, arguing that ‘memories’ of the patterns and prototypes from past evolutionary cycles guide and influence the present cycle, each physical life-form being a vehicle for an evolving consciousness.

In summary: Lipton exposes many deficiencies in orthodox biology and evolutionary theory, and provides a good summary of cutting-edge biological research.

We are, as he says, ‘spirits in material form’ and should live ‘in a way that supports everyone and everything on this planet’. However, although he believes the new biology ‘bridges science and spirit’, the ‘spiritual’ vision he offers is severely limited. He only accepts the existence of recognized forms of physical matter-energy, and ignores research pointing to the existence of more ethereal realms behind and within the physical world.

KOMBUCHA – WHAT IS IT?

KOMBUCHA

A Potted Background History

The first recorded reference to Kombucha as a health drink was apparently reported over two thousand years ago in the Tsin Dynasty of the Chinese Empire in 221 B.C.. It was then known as “the Divine Tsche”.

Some 200 years later, in 14A.D., a Korean Herbalist called Kombu treated the Japanaese Emporor Inkyo for various ailments and it became known as Kombu Ch’a (The herbalist’s name plus the Chinese word for tea “Ch’a”.

In mediaeval times, Japanese warriors would carry hip flasks of Kombucha into battle to maintain their health and give them energy.

Since then, Kombucha culture has had a consistently favourable record for promoting good health and has been part of natural medicine that has been part of everyday life in the Far East and Eurasia until relatively recently, and has increasingly made inroads into western thinking over the last few years.

Kombucha has long been part of traditional folk medicine in rural Russia where for much of the time the peasant culture was untouched by Western medicine. Unsurprisingly, the first modern scientific research on Kombucha was initiated in the Soviet Union.

Indeed, the Nobel prizewinning author Alexandr Solzenitsyn wrote in his autobiography “The Cancer Ward” that Kombucha helped to save his life whilst he was incarcerated in the Siberian slave camps in the 1950’s and 60’s.

Through the second part of the twentieth century, Kombucha enjoyed some marginal faddish success in Europe (Germany and Italy) and to some extent was popular in Australia through the work of Harald Tietze, a German born herb grower in New South Wales.

Its main resurgence came about in the 1990’s on the West Coast of the USA largely thanks to its popularity with HIV sufferers. Consequently, the main interest in Kombucha has been amongst people who feel that medical practices are not adequately successful with chronic diseases, particularly those relating to deficiencies in the immune system.

It’s likely, then, that with greater recognition of environmental and stress factors on day to day life, together with the limitations of conventional medicine, that the potent anti toxic and immune enhancing properties of Kombucha will become increasingly recognised and accepted as part of treatments of illness.

How does Kombucha Work?

For the past 150 years medical treatment has been based on the idea that a particular disease is caused by a specific disease-causing germ. Such “germ theory” dates only from the mid-nineteenth century and led to the development of antibiotics whose purpose is to kill off offending germs.

Undoubtedly, antibiotics have a valuable place in the control of life-threatening illnesses and have saved many lives over the years. However, overuse of antibiotics results in an increasing number of problems:-

  • Increase in the number of diseases caused by antibiotics themselves (iatrogenic diseases).
  • Weakening of the body’s immune system through the use of antibiotics, making recovery from the original illness and new germs and viruses more difficult.
  • The emergence of bacterial strains which become resistant to antibiotics.
  • Antibiotics have been developed by the pharmaceutical industry using synthetic chemicals which compromise healing the body’s whole system without side effects. Which, in turn, need to be treated with further drugs etc. etc.

Antibiotics means “Against Life” (Anti = Against; Bios = Life), whereas Probiotics means “For Life” (Pro = For; Bios = Life).

Kombucha works with the probiotic life of the body rather than destroying microbes, which is the purpose of using antibiotics.

Probiotic Kombucha encourages the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut in a similar way to acidophilus bacteria, the active ingredient in live yoghurt.

Kombucha should be seen as a food unusually rich in nutrition, rather than just a health drink. As in yoghurt, the bacteria that it contains are a great source of nutrition,  but also contains a wide range of organic acids, vitamins and enzymes that give it an extraordinary property. It contains, amongst other organic acids and vitamins:

  • Vitamin B – Vitamin B1, B2, B6 and B12 that provide energy, help to process fats and proteins and which are vital for the functioning of the nervous system.
  • Vitamin C – a strong detoxifier, immune booster and energy booster.
  • Lactic Acid – essential for a healthy digestive system and for energy production by the liver, and is not found in the tissues of people with cancer.
  • Acetic Acid – an antiseptic and inhibitor of harmful bacteria.
  • Glucuronic Acid – is one of the few products that can cope with pollution from the products of the petroleum industry as well as plastics, herbicides, pesticides and resins. It “kidnaps” the phenols in the liver which are then eliminated by the kidneys. Another by-product of glucuronic acid is glucosamine, the structure associated with cartilage, collagen, and fluids which lubricate the joints.
  • Amino Acids – produce important enzymes, such as glutathione which is a powerful antioxidant providing protection from pollution, alcohol, and which is depleted from the body when you are on a pharmaceutical drug regime.

Because of its role in pH regulation and of the above detoxifying acids, Kombucha is a valuable restorative of liver function.

The most commonly observed effects of Kombucha are:

  • Balancing the metabolism of the body.
  • Cleaning the Blood and helping to regulate the pH level of the body.
  • Improving liver, gall bladder and digestive functions.
  • Detoxifying the body and improving the immune system.
  • Raising energy levels.

Kombucha is not, however, a universal cure for all illnesses. Many other factors need to be taken into account which affect good health such as diet, exercise, lifestyle, emotional outlook and psychological make-up as well as the length of time that you have had a particular imbalance or disease. When feeling tired, ill or out of sorts it can be hard to take positive steps towards a better lifestyle and better health. Kombucha’s role is to assist the body to function properly, by relieving some symptoms and giving the energy and encouragement to improve our health.

Kombucha does not have to be taken as a remedy for people who are ill, but most importantly as preventative therapy to keep the body functioning well.

RADIATION -Why Julie doesn’t like it.

RADIATION – A few points

The low levels of radiation you are exposed to during medical tests can be measured in units called millisieverts (mSv).

Some examples of different levels of radiation are:

A single chest X-ray (0.02 mSv) – This is equivalent to the amount of radiation you would be exposed to during a return flight from London to Spain (the higher up in the atmosphere you are, the less protection you have against cosmic rays).

Natural radiation (2.2 mSv) – The average annual dose that a person in the UK receives from natural sources.

A mammogram (2 to 5 mSv) – The amount of radiation that a woman receives after having a mammogram .

Equivalent to having between 100 and 250 X- Rays, at the same time.

The benefit of detecting breast cancer at an early stage is the dilemma which balances against the risk of any problems from the radiation exposure.

A computerised tomography (CT) scan of the chest, abdomen and pelvis (10 mSv) – The amount of radiation a person receives from a CT scan.

Equivalent to having up to 500 X- Rays, at the same time.

Working with radiation (20 mSv) – The UK legal limit, as set by the Ionising Radiations Regulations (1999), that a classified person who works with radiation may be exposed to in any given year.

However, most workers receive considerably less than this.

This is equivalent to having up to 1,000 X- Rays, over the course of a year, or approx 20 X-Rays per week.

VITAMIN B12

Vitamin B12 – (Cobalamin)

Vitamin B12 is important for the way the body works, and people who don’t have enough of it may feel tired or have a lack of energy

Vitamin B12 helps in the production of healthy red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body.

Not having enough vitamin B12 makes the body produce larger than normal red blood cells, which don’t do their job as well.

Once diagnosed, vitamin B12 deficiency can usually be treated successfully with B12 injections and with B12 tablets together with a change in diet.

Symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency

Anaemia caused by a lack of vitamin B12 can result in symptoms which include:

  • Extreme tiredness
  • Being out of breath
  • Feeling faint
  • Tinnitus
  • Lack of appetite

More specific symptoms linked to a lack of  B12 include:

  • Yellowing of the skin
  • Sore, red tongue
  • Mouth Ulcers
  • Changes or loss of some sense of touch
  • Feeling less pain
  • Walking problems
  • Vision Problems
  • Mood changes, irritability, depression or psychosis
  • Symptoms of dementia

Causes of vitamin B12 deficiency

Vitamin B12 deficiency is more common in older people and affects around one in 10 over 75s.

The most common cause of vitamin B12 deficiency is pernicious anemia, an auto-immune condition that affects around one in 10,000 people.

B12 deficiency is risk for people who follow a strict vegan diet who don’t eat the major food sources of B12: meat, eggs and dairy products. Babies whose mums are vegetarians may have  B12 deficiency.

Other causes of vitamin B12 deficiency include:

  • Atrophic gastric, or thinning of the stomach lining
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Surgery to remove part of the stomach or small intestine
  • Digestive conditions such as Crohn’s, coeliac disease, bacterial growth or a parasite.
  • Medication, including proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) for indegestion.

Diagnosis of vitamin B12 deficiency

Blood tests and examination of blood cells under the microscope assess haemoglobin levels, the size of red blood cells and the level of vitamin B12 in the blood. The levels of folate are also usually checked for the related condition folate deficiency anaemia.

Once the diagnosis is confirmed, further tests may be carried out to try to find out what’s causing the anaemia.

A referral may be made to a specialist, such as a haematologist for blood conditions, a gastroenterologist for digestive problems or a dietician for advice on eating food containing more vitamin B12.

How vitamin B12 or folate deficiency anaemia is treated

Most cases of vitamin B12 and folate deficiency can be easily treated with injections or tablets to replace the vitamin you are deficient in.

Vitamin B12 supplements are usually given by injection at first. Then, depending on whether your B12 deficiency is related to your diet, you will either require B12 tablets between meals or regular injections. These treatments may be needed for the rest of your life.

Folic acid tablets are used to restore folate levels. These usually need to be taken for four months.

In some cases, improving your diet can help treat the condition and prevent it recurring. Vitamin B12 is found in meat, fish, eggs, dairy products, yeast extract (such as Marmite) and specially fortified foods. The best sources of folate include green vegetables such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts and peas.

Anaemia symptoms

General symptoms of anaemia (where you have fewer red blood cells than normal or you have an abnormally low amount of a substance called haemoglobin in each red blood cell) include:

  • extreme tiredness (fatigue)
  • lack of energy (lethargy)
  • breathlessness
  • feeling faint
  • headaches
  • pale skin
  • Palpitations
  • Tinnitus
  • loss of appetite and weight loss

Vitamin B12 deficiency

If you have anaemia caused by a vitamin B12 deficiency, you may have other symptoms in addition to those listed above, such as:

  • a pale yellow tinge to your skin
  • a sore and red tongue
  • mouth ulcers
  • pins and needles
  • changes in the way that you walk and move around
  • disturbed vision
  • irritability
  • depression
  • changes in the way you think, feel and behave
  • a decline in your mental abilities

B12 in Food

Vitamin B12  can only be manufactured by bacteria and can only be found naturally in animal products, however synthetic forms are available and can be added to food, such as cereals.

B12 can be eaten in large doses to no ill effect because any excess is excreted by the body or stored in the liver for use when needed for up to a year.

VITAMIN K2

Vitamin K2, D and Calcium

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin known for the important role it plays in blood clotting. However, there are different kinds of vitamin K, and they are completely different.

The health benefits of vitamin K2 go far beyond blood clotting, which is done by vitamin K1, and vitamin K2 also works in partnership with a number of other nutrients, including calcium and vitamin D.

The importance of Vitamin K2?

Vitamin K is actually a group of fat-soluble vitamins. Of the two main ones, K1 and K2, the one receiving the most attention is K1, which is found in green leafy vegetables and is very easy to get through your diet. This lack of distinction has created a lot of confusion, and it’s one of the reasons why vitamin K2 has been overlooked for so long.

The three types of vitamin K are:

  1. Vitamin K1,  is found naturally in plants, especially green vegetables; K1 goes directly to your liver and helps you maintain healthy blood clotting
  2. Vitamin K2,  is made by the bacteria that line your gastrointestinal tract; K2 goes straight to your blood vessel walls, bones, and tissues other than your liver
  3. Vitamin K3, is a synthetic form. It’s important to note that toxicity has occurred in infants injected with this synthetic vitamin K3

It also plays a role in removing calcium from areas where it shouldn’t be, such as in your arteries and soft tissues.

“K2 is really critical for keeping your bones strong and your arteries clear,

Vitamin K2 can be broken into two additional categories, called:

  1. MK-4 (menaquinone-4), a short-chain form of vitamin K2 found in butter, egg yolks, and animal-based foods
  2. MK-7 (menaquinone-7), longer-chain forms found in fermented foods. There’s a variety of these long-chain forms but the most common one is MK-7. This is the one you’ll want to look for in supplements, because in a supplement form, the MK-4 products are actually synthetic. They are not derived from natural food products containing MK-4.

Vitamin K1 exclusively participates in blood clotting — that’s its sole purpose.

K2 on the other hand comes from a whole different set of food sources, and its biological role is to help move calcium into the proper areas in your body, such as your bones and teeth.

The MK-7 – these long-chain, natural bacterial-derived vitamin K2 – is from a fermentation process, which offers a number of health advantages:

  1. It stays in your body longer, and
  2. It has a longer half-life, which means you can just take it once a day in very convenient dosing

How Much Vitamin K2 Do You Need?

The optimal amounts of vitamin K2 are still under investigation, but it seems likely that 180 to 200 micrograms of vitamin K2 should be enough to activate your body’s K2-dependent proteins to shuttle the calcium where it needs to be, and remove it from the places where it shouldn’t.

When we’re lacking K2, we’re at much greater risk for osteoporosis, heart disease, and cancer. And these are three concerns that used to be relatively rare. Over the last 100 years, as we’ve changed the way we produced our food and the way we eat, they have become very common.

Researchers are also looking into other health benefits. For example, one recent study published in the journal Modern Rheumatologyfound that vitamin K2 has the potential to improve disease activity besides osteoporosis in those with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Another, published in the journal Science, found that vitamin K2 serves as a mitochondrial electron carrier, thereby helping maintain normal ATP production in mitochondrial dysfunction, such as that found in Parkinson’s Disease.

The Interplay Between Vitamin K2, Vitamin D, and Calcium

Vitamin D is a critical nutrient for optimal health and is best obtained from sun exposure. However, many are taking oral vitamin D, which may become problematic unless you’re also getting sufficient amounts of vitamin K2.

When you take vitamin D, your body creates more of these vitamin K2-dependent proteins, the proteins that will move the calcium around. They have a lot of potential health benefits. But until the K2 comes in to activate those proteins, those benefits aren’t realized. So, really, if you’re taking vitamin D, you’re creating an increased demand for K2. And vitamin D and K2 work together to strengthen your bones and improve your heart health.

… For so long, we’ve been told to take calcium for osteoporosis… and vitamin D, which we know is helpful. But then, more studies are coming out showing that increased calcium intake is causing more heart attacks and strokes. That created a lot of confusion around whether calcium is safe or not. But that’s the wrong question to be asking, because we’ll never properly understand the health benefits of calcium or vitamin D, unless we take into consideration K2. That’s what keeps the calcium in its right place.

IMPORTANT: If You Take Vitamin D, You Need K2

This is a really crucial point: If you opt for oral vitamin D, you need to also consume in your food or take supplemental vitamin K2.

There are so many people on the vitamin-D-mega-dose bandwagon, taking more and more of vitamin D. And it could absolutely be causing harm if you are lacking the K2 to complete the job to get the calcium where it’s supposed to be,.

About 150-200 micrograms of K2 will meet the need for the “average” healthy person.

The good news is that vitamin K2 has no toxicity. No toxic effects have ever been demonstrated in the medical literature.

If You Need Calcium, Aim for Calcium-Rich Foods First

For those who are calcium deficient,  look to food sources high in calcium, before opting for a supplement. This is because many high calcium foods also contain naturally high amounts of vitamin K2!

Nature cleverly gives us these two nutrients in combination, so they work optimally. Good sources of calcium include dairy, especially cheeses, and vegetables, although veggies aren’t high in K2.

Additionally, magnesium is far more important than calcium if you are going to consider supplementing. Magnesium will also help keep calcium in the cell to do its job far better.

If you do chose to supplement with calcium, for whatever reason, it’s important to maintain the proper balance between your intake of calcium and other nutrients such as:

  • Vitamin K2
  • Vitamin D
  • Magnesium

The Importance of Magnesium

Magnesium is another important player to allow for proper function of calcium. As with vitamin D and K2, magnesium deficiency is also common, and when you are lacking in magnesium and take calcium, you may exacerbate the situation.

Vitamin K2 and magnesium complement each other, as magnesium helps lower blood pressure, which is an important component of heart disease.

Dietary sources of magnesium include sea vegetables, such as kelp, dulse, and nori. Few people eat these on a regular basis however, if at all. Vegetables can also be a good source, along with whole grains. However, grains MUST be prepared properly to remove phytates and anti-nutrients that can otherwise block your absorption of magnesium.

How Can You Tell if You’re Lacking in Vitamin K2?

There’s no way to test for vitamin K2 deficiency. But by assessing your diet and lifestyle, you can get an idea of whether or not you may be lacking in this critical nutrient. If you have any of the following health conditions, you’re likely deficient in vitamin K2 as they are all connected to K2:

  • Do you have osteoporosis?
  • Do you have heart disease?
  • Do you have diabetes?

If you do not have any of those health conditions, but do NOT regularly eat high amounts of the following foods, then your likelihood of being vitamin K2 deficient is still very high:

  • Grass-fed organic animal products (i.e. eggs, butter, dairy)
  • Certain fermented foods such as natto, or vegetables fermented using a starter culture of vitamin K2-producing bacteria. Please note that most fermented vegetables are not really high in vitamin K2 and come in at about 50 mcg per serving. However, if specific starter cultures are used they can have ten times as much, or 500 mcg per serving.
  • Goose liver pâté
  • Certain cheeses such as Brie and Gouda (these two are particularly high in K2, containing about 75 mcg per ounce)

Fermented vegetables, which are one of my new passions, primarily for supplying beneficial bacteria back into our gut, can be a great source of vitamin K if you ferment your own using the proper starter culture.

Note that not every strain of bacteria makes K2. For example, most yoghurts have almost no vitamin K2. Certain types of cheeses are very high in K2, and others are not. It really depends on the specific bacteria. You can’t assume that any fermented food will be high in K2.

VITAMIN D AND CANCER

Vitamin D “Enormous potential to beat cancer”

The last ten years has seen a huge body of research evidence showing that:

* Vitamin D is an important factor in cancer prevention.

* Vitamin D activates the immune system to work against rogue cells.

* Vitamin D has the ability to normalise and correct cancer cells.

So it boosts the immune system, could prevent cancer, AND (according to several research studies) may even help beat it.

Furthermore, it seems to play an important role in preventing illness!

Vitamin D

* Research in 2012 in Cancer Causes and Control presented findings that former/never smokers were 44 per cent less likely to die from lung cancer if they had blood levels of vitamin D above 44nmo/litre. That applied to whether or not they had cancer – it seems to prevent, and reduce deaths.

* In 2013, researchers from St Louis University showed that women with a BRCA1 mutation are more likely to develop an aggressive breast cancer but vitamin D can block this pathway. BRCA1 is not just behind breast cancer but other cancers too like some prostate cancer.

* Another 2013 study,  in the Journal of Cellular Biology showed that vitamin D blocks cathapsin L which makes cells grow uncontrollably in cancers.

Vitamin D works like a hormone

Vitamin D could be an important ingredient in any anti-cancer package.

It comes from sunshine.

A week lying on a beach will provide about 70,000 International Units, or I.U.s.

5,000 IU’s is the daily recommended level for people with cancer. Vitamin D may sound like a vitamin, but it acts more like a hormone with receptor sites on healthy cells and even more on cancer cells.   Three of the areas in which it acts are:

  1. Low Vitamin D levels are linked with higher rates of cancer

The Boston Medical School has completed a great many research studies on vitamin D. Their Professor Hollick quotes, “If women obtained adequate levels of vitamin D there would be 25 per cent less deaths from breast cancer.

Hollick is not alone in stressing the importance for women and breast cancer.  St Georges Hospital in London calculated from their studies that women with low levels of vitamin D in their breast tissue have three and a half times greater risk of breast cancer.

  1. Immune booster

When it comes to fighting cancer, there seems little doubt about the virtues of Vit D. Many experts believe it is more like a hormone having receptor sites on both the cell and nuclear membranes – especially in cancer cells! According to research from the University of Copenhagen in 2010, when T-lymphocytes of the immune system come across a pathogen, the first thing they do is bind to a vitamin D molecule to ´activate´ themselves.

Recent studies suggest that the action of vitamin D is enhanced by vitamin K.

Unfortunately, most adults are increasingly short of both D and K vitamins.

  1. A Natural Cancer Cure?

Research published in the Journal of Cell Biology November 17, 2008; 183(4):697-710 has shown that vitamin D can adjust almost everything in the cancer cell, from its genetic messaging to its cytoskeleton. It can switch genes on and off, and it can reduce cell division, and it can calm the cancer cells so that they settle rather than spread. It seems vitamin D can actually return a cancer cell to a normal and healthy state. One pathway seems to control everything.

There is more than enough research to be clear that vitamin D could help prevent cancer.

From the latest studies, it is increasingly clear that every cancer patient should be having a daily half hour in the sunshine, or supplementing with Vitamin D.

The problem is: The sunshine factorWhen it comes to vitamin D, are you getting enough?”

Cancer charities and cancer bodies continually deliver the message that  sunshine is bad for you and that sunshine cause skin cancer, and even melanoma?

There are several studies which show over 90 per cent of people with melanoma are deficient in vitamin D; and others which show that people who have regular exposure to sunshine develop LESS cancers! Furthermore, 2011 research showed half of melanoma is found in locations not exposed to the sun.

Vitamin that cuts risk of cancer

Two studies in the USA showed that women with the highest levels of vitamin D were up to 50 per cent less likely to develop breast cancer. One study involved St. Georges Hospital Medical School in London and US researchers at Harvard and University of California; the other was carried out by Canadian researchers at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. Both were presented at a meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Washington. The doctors in the research concluded, “Women with high exposure to the sun as teenagers may be protected against breast cancer in later life, and Boosting levels of vitamin D could be beneficial at a time when breast cells are developing.”

New research draws some interesting conclusions:

  • Moores Cancer Centre at UCSD, San Diego concluded from a mega study of previous research that up to half the cases of breast cancer, and two thirds of the cases of rectal cancer in the USA could have been prevented if people had had adequate blood levels of vitamin D.

– The Journal of Steroid Biochemistry and Molecular Biology reviewed two studies concluding that women with the highest blood levels had the lowest risk of breast cancer 15 to 30 minutes in the sun every day, or 2000 IUs of supplement were recommended. One study showed that the lower blood levels of vitamin D, the more dense (and dangerous) the breast tissue.

What if you already have cancer?

Research published in the Journal of Cell Biology November 17, 2008; 183(4):697-710 has shown that vitamin D can adjust almost everything in the cancer cell and return it to the normal, healthy state. Another study has shown that vitamin D can bind to mutated cancer cell receptor sites and cause cell death.

Additionally:

  • Researchers at the Harvard Medical School and Harvard School of Public Health have concluded that good levels of vitamin D in the body may help people with early stage lung cancer survive longer after surgery. Patients who had surgery in the sunny summer months where vitamin D levels are higher were more than twice as likely to be alive 5 years after surgery compared with those with low vitamin D levels having winter time surgery.

Dr David Christiani said the survival differences were dramatic; the highest levels of vitamin D saw 72 per cent 5- year survivals compared with just 29 per cent for people with the lowest levels.

  • A study in September 2008, led by Pamela Goodwin, MD, Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto, research concluded that women with vitamin D deficiency at the time of breast cancer diagnosis were 94 per cent more likely to experience cancer spread and 73 per cent more likely to die over the next 10 years compared to women with adequate vitamin D levels.
  • Breast cancer cells have been shown to have vitamin D receptor sites on their surface. Since women who have had breast cancer in one breast are clearly interested in preventing breast cancer in the other, supplementation of vitamin D seems an essential part of their anti-cancer programme.

Vitamin D supplementation is being used as part of breast cancer treatment programmes in some US hospitals; it is being used in conjunction with radiotherapy in others.

What is becoming clear in all the recent scientific studies on vitamin D is that:

  • A deficiency plays a crucial role in increased risk of cancer and a number of other illnesses
  • Most people in our the Western world are deficient. This is hardly surprising as they may live in colder, rainier climates with little winter sun; they may live out of the sun – watching TV indoors and working in offices; they may even refrain from enjoying sunshine because several major charities have warned them against sunshine!
  • You can only obtain reasonable quantities of this vitamin through exposure to sunshine; a far lesser amount may be obtained through consuming oily fish. After that, other foods contribute very little. So the third option is to take supplements!

First Discoveries

In 1919 Sir Edward Mellanby was working indoors with dogs and horses during the winter and concluded that if they didn’t get sunlight they developed bone disorders. He concluded that the essential action of fats preventing these problems was due to a vitamin; and that cod liver oil was a strong preventative agent

The chemical structure of this vitamin, which he named factor X, was identified in the 1930s by Professor A Windaus. And thus vitamin D came about. Bone disorders had also been noted in humans – typically rickets in children.

Vitamin D And Bones

Vitamin D is essential for maintaining bone density and preventing osteoporosis as it helps the absorption of the bone-building materials calcium and phosphorus. In this action it is helped by magnesium.

Vitamin D and cortisol (the stress hormone) have recently been shown in the USA to be the crucial determinants in osteoporosis. Not oestrogen.

Cortisol can bind with receptor sites on bone cells normally used for natural progesterone (not natural oestrogen) and this weakens bone structure. Apart from taking HRT many doctors will advise more dairy. Dairy foods provide high levels of blood calcium (and a tiny amount of vitamin D). However this calcium surge actually depresses vitamin D levels and the bodys ability to absorb magnesium. Catch 22. Dairy gives you high blood calcium, but low bone calcium.

Much work has been done on the effect of vitamin D with bones. For example, in 1991 Tufts University, Boston showed that vitamin D was essential for improving bone density and supplementation was important in the winter months. This work was confirmed in Lyon, France in 1992 where a group taking 800 IUs of vitamin D and 1.2 gms of calcium per day had 43 per cent fewer hip fractures and 32 per cent fewer other, non-vertebral fractures. So for osteoporosis think vitamin D and a healthy intake of greens, rather than dairy and HRT supplements!

Sources of Vitamin D

Sunlight on our skin is now thought to be the main source of vitamin D. Night shift workers have lowered blood levels of vitamin D. Heavily tanned, or black people have real problems making vitamin D through the effect of sunlight in their skin. On the other hand, people with Celtic, or Type I skin (ginger hair/ freckles/ burn easily but dont tan), could be said to have skin designed to pick up on any stray bit of UV light in their northerly natural habitat. These days, though, they do tend to avoid the sun, for good reasons, but this can land them with a vitamin D shortage.

Whilst a little is found in dairy foods, the major food source is fish liver oils (omega-3 fish oil supplements dont contain much, though). Cod liver oil is unfortunately a poor source of vitamin D compared to halibut liver oil, while most of the top brands actually contain an added D supplement. Unfortunately, in order to get a useful dose of vitamin D from fish liver oil, you would simultaneously be getting an even bigger dose of vitamin A, which then can interfere with the beneficial effect of vitamin D on bone density – catch 22. (Really this is a biological, practical system of checks and balances. But its thrown out of balance by our near-universal vitamin D deficiency).

Kidney or liver disease (and alcohol) depress vitamin D levels; indeed anything that interferes with the digestion and absorption of oils and fats will – including any form of diarrhoea, diseases such as coeliac and Crohns, and pale bowel motions for whatever reason.

So also do antacids and acid-inhibitors like Zantac, cholesterol-lowering drugs (e.g. statins), mineral oils, anticonvulsants and toxic chemicals in the environment (e.g. smog).

Recommended Daily Allowance

On a sunny summer day, a young adult exposing a fair amount of skin for 15-30 minutes will manufacture about 20,000 IUs of vitamin D; this goes down with age to 10,000 IUs or less.

The best supplementation to take is vitamin D3. D3 provides vitamin D in its most usable form.

Most anticancer experts suggest people with cancer ensure that they are getting at least 2,500 IUs a day, and ideally 4,000 IUs..

What Is The Situation With Skin Cancer?

Although excess and burning sunshine can give rise to skin cancer, the charities that scare people against sunshine are doing the public a huge and dangerous dis-service.

The University of New Mexico (Journal of Nat Cancer Institute 2005, 97) has shown that its research findings conclude people with high exposure to the sun are less likely to die from melanomas. They conclude vitamin D might be the protecting factor.

Increasing levels of skin cancer and melanoma are largely due to increasing levels of  chemicals in the body and particularly on the skin, together with low levels of protective, antioxidant nutrients such as vitamins C, E, and omega-3 oils and minerals.

One research study showed that with identical women, the one on the oestrogenic contraceptive pill had twice the risk of developing melanoma. Some sun screens have had chemical ingredients banned in Scandanavia as they mimic the action of oestrogen on the skin. And melanoma is driven by oestrogen, not simply excess sun light.

Conversely, very recent evidence indicates that high blood levels of vitamin D actually help to prevent burning by speeding up tanning of the skin!

It is quite clear that everyone who is unable to achieve regular, gentle sun exposure would be well advised to supplement with a vitamin D3 supplement, at a dose of at least 400 IUs for prevention and 2,500 IUs to 4,000 IUs if they already have cancer.

There appear to be no reported contraindications with cancer drugs or cancer treatments in fact, exactly the opposite seems true.

Anybody with cancer, or at high risk of developing it, will do themselves no harm with a daily dose of up to 10,000 IUs, and may very well help themselves greatly. Some hospitals have been using vitamin D supplementation with breast cancer patients, and/or during radiotherapy, and/or as a part of a general programme of cancer therapy.

Vitamin D, are you getting enough?

If you cannot get adequate levels of daily sunshine nor eat large amounts of oily fish, then you might think seriously about Vitamin D supplements as part of your disease- prevention thinking. And if you want to supplement make sure it is the best, naturally-sourced supplement you can find.
